The British Orienteering Federation ( english British Orienteering Federation, BOF , often shortened to just only British Orienteering Federation ) is the national orienteering governing body of the United Kingdom . It was founded in June 1967 and is a member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).

history

Orienteering was introduced in Great Britain in the 1950s. The sport received support from the Olympians John Disley and Chris Brasher as well as from the Swedish baron 'Rak' Largerfelt. In May 1962, the first Scottish orienteering championships took place in Dunkeld, Scotland . The Swede Jan Kjellström , son of the founder of the compass manufacturer Silva, then spread the sport in the United Kingdom in a traffic accident until his death in 1967. The Jan Kjellström International Festival of Orienteering has been held in his honor since 1967 .
