Bruno Stane Grill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bruno Stane-Grill (born July 9, 1927 in Mlini , Dubrovnik-Neretva County , Croatia ; † October 11, 2012 in Cologne , Germany ) was a Croatian sculptor, painter and draftsman.

Life

As a young man who, after graduating from high school , was imprisoned for three years in Gerovo , a Yugoslav prison camp for political prisoners, and then served in the Yugoslav Navy, Grill began studying art at the Werkkunstschule in Zagreb. In 1956 he fled to the Federal Republic of Germany. Grill worked for a year in a factory in Oberhausen and as a trainer for a water polo club there. Between 1957 and 1963 he studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Rolf Sackenheim and Zoltan Székessy , who made him a master student in the third semester and enabled him to work in his own master student studio. In 1960 he was awarded the Poensgen Prize of the Academy.

His other friends at the Academy included Hans Schwippert , Walter Koengeter , Rolf Crummenauer , Manfred Seiler , Teo Otto , KO Goetz , Günter Uecker and Joseph Beuys , who - when he married the painter Anna Maria Wess in 1963 - was his best man. After his time at the academy he set up his studio in an old dance hall in Düsseldorf-Niederkassel and later in the Wasserburg Haus Brück in Erkrath, where he worked until his stroke in February 2008.

He was a long-time member of the BBK and the Croatian artist association HDLU.

Since his studies he has shown his work in solo and group exhibitions.

For 33 years he worked as an art teacher at the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium in Langenfeld.

Since 1970 he has been drawing on large canvases in front of an audience in public spaces, in theaters, concert halls, at church congresses and repeatedly at concerts in Catholic and Protestant churches, about which the WDR Cologne reported several times.

A number of his graphic and / or plastic works can be found in the art collection of the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia , the city of Düsseldorf and the Hetjensmuseum Düsseldorf, and in private collections.

In 1991, after the Serbian-Montenegrin attack on his hometown Dubrovnik and the destruction of his region, he and his ex-wife Anna Maria Grill organized the aid organization 'Artists help Dubrovnik - Düsseldorfer help Dubrovnik', which many Düsseldorf artists and companies join with donations and signatures for a town twinning between Düsseldorf and Dubrovnik .

In February 2009 Bruno Stane-Grill suffered a severe stroke that paralyzed him on one side. Since then, he has been cared for by his daughter Nicole Grill in a shared apartment in Cologne until he died in the intensive care unit of a Cologne hospital in 2012.
