The Pirate Bride (original title: Buccaneer's Girl ) is an American adventure film by Frederick de Cordova from 1950.

action

New Orleans and the Caribbean at the beginning of the 19th century: Pirate captain Frederic Baptiste has made a name for himself as " Robin Hood of the Seas". He regularly raids the ships of the wealthy businessman Alexander Narbonne in order to then distribute the booty to those in need. When another ship is attacked by Narbonne, the singer Deborah McCoy is on board as a stowaway. While the male crew of the hijacked ship is abandoned in a lifeboat, the beautiful Deborah is allowed to stay with Baptiste on the ship. Arrived in New Orleans, Deborah leaves the ship and is soon accepted as an artist and companion in Madame Brizar's "School for Genteel Young Ladies". After months of training, Deborah has her first assignment at a party held by the esteemed Captain Robert Kingston, who is engaged to Arlene, the governor's niece. To Deborah's surprise, however, Kingston is none other than the wanted pirate captain Baptiste. Deborah promises him not to reveal his secret.

In truth, Robert killed the real Baptiste some time ago, who was supposed to ambush his rivals on behalf of Narbonne. He wants to use the money from the raids to build up a local fleet. That would be a thorn in the side of the villainous Narbonne, who by chance learns of Robert's double game and devises a trap with his secretary Patout. However, Deborah has heard of Narbonne's plans and secretly goes on Robert's ship to warn him. Thanks to Deborah's information, Robert can sink the three remaining ships from Narbonne and then return to New Orleans. Deborah confesses his love for him and he is not averse either, but since he comes from a better family and is already engaged to Arlene, he rejects her. Robert learns, however, that Arlene married Narbonne while he was away. She betrays her alumni to Narbonne. Robert and his crew are arrested and he mistakenly believes that Deborah betrayed him.

Robert and his men are eventually released from prison by Deborah and the local sailors. Robert, who has since learned that Arlene betrayed him, ends up reunited with Deborah.

background

The figure of Baptiste was inspired by Jean Laffite , a French pirate in the Caribbean at the beginning of the 19th century. His life story was filmed in 1938 by Cecil B. DeMille as The Buccaneer of Louisiana with Fredric March in the leading role. According to Arte , this film shows how Baptiste has to choose between two fundamentally different characters, namely “the rebelliously charming Deborah (...) and the cold, calculating Arlène Villon, who embodies the established society of New Orleans (...). Director Frederick de Cordova stages the encounter between these two opposing women as a veritable women's wrestling match in ruffled dresses from the Belle Époque . "

The Austrian film pioneer Joe May worked on the story, it was his last collaboration on a film. Because of the restrictions of the Hays Code - which, among other things, prohibited sexual lewdness - the two scriptwriters and the two story providers faced a problem with Madame Brizar . In the script, she was thought of as the head of a fine brothel, but in the film she appears more like a kind of trainer to avoid conflicts with the censors. Several songs, written by Walter Scharf and performed by Yvonne De Carlo, were added to the film plot: Monsieur (You Have But to Say the Word) , Because You're In Love and A Sailor Sails the Seven Seas . The Pirate Bride was filmed on a total of four acres on the Universal studio site. A French garrison camp from around 1810 was precisely reproduced for the film .

The Pirate Bride premiered in American cinemas on March 1, 1950. In West Germany, it was only released in cinemas over two years later, in April 1952.

The lexicon of the international film found that The Pirate Bride offered “solid pirate adventures based on a tried and tested recipe: action on water and on land, intrigue, jealousy, fine society, tough men, beautiful women.” Cinema gave the film an average rating and wrote: “Action plus sweet romance. " Leonard Maltin gives the film two out of four stars, it is" pure escapism ".
