Buchendorf is a district of Gauting in the Starnberg district in Upper Bavaria . The place was incorporated into Gauting on January 1, 1978 as part of the municipal reform.

The place is located on a clearing island , surrounded by Forstenrieder Park in the east, Forst Kasten in the north and the terminal moraines of the Würm Glacier , which are more than 60 m high in the south between Buchendorf and Leutstetten .

Prehistoric development

In the Biber , on the northeastern edge of Buchendorf, you will find one of the best-preserved square entrenchments of the late Latène period (2nd century BC, so-called Celtic or Roman hill), the Viereckschanze Buchendorf . The complex is almost square surrounded by earth walls with a height of approx. 2.6 m and measures around 110–120 m side length. In 1945 the local flak headlights were brought into position here, which was not without traces.

During the Roman Empire , Buchendorf was on the Via Julia , which connected Augsburg with Salzburg . Around the place you can find graves from different prehistoric epochs.

middle Ages

The first known documentary mention referred to the village as Pouchar village in the 12th century . An older name than Boo in the Kysilas Foundation around 800 is controversial.

The development of today's town center can be traced back to the 10th century. South of Buchendorf, in the direction of Leutstetten , there was a small castle ( Burgstall ), today Schlossberg , in the Würmschleife until at least the 11th century .

Modern times

In 1750 Buchendorf had 32 properties, which, in contrast to the other smaller settlements in the area, included six entire farms. Until the 19th century, the almost circular cleared area was still surrounded on all sides with forest.

Village pond

Between the town center and the Römerschanze lies the elongated body of water that gives the street Am Weiher its name. It is about 105 m long and 30 m wide and is bordered like a biotope.

Catholic branch church St. Michael

The church has a flat-roofed nave with a recessed choir with ribbed vaults and an apse in five sides of an octagon. The tower is a simple saddle tower, on the south side of which the sacristy is located in the basement of the tower. The foundation walls of the church go back to the 12th or 13th century. The proportions of the church are still Romanesque . In 1595 the church was enlarged and baroque in the 17th century .

Inside there are wall paintings from 1595, which were uncovered again in 1964.

Russian Orthodox convent of St. Elisabeth

On October 1, 2005, an Orthodox women's monastery opened its doors in the village . The monastery community bears the name of St. Grand Duchess Elisabeth , the Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt .
