Bud Spencer & Terence Hill: Slaps and Beans (German: Schellen und Bohnen ) is a computer game released in December 2017, developed by the Bologna- based Trinity Team and published by the Augsburg company Buddy Productions. The game, financed entirely by crowdfunding via Kickstarter, is intended to pay homage to the two eponymous actors Bud Spencer and Terence Hill . Also intended as a gift to fans of the actors, Slaps and Beans is the first official computer game for both.

The game, a 2D sidescroll beat 'em up with a retro pixel look, was first released for Windows, MacOS and Linux on December 15, 2017. Implementations for current game consoles followed in July 2018. At the end of 2019, for the 90th birthday of Bud Spencer, the 90th Anniversary Edition took place as a physical version for PC, PS4 and Switch, which also contains two autograph cards and a poster.

Gameplay

The plot of the game pays homage to some of the most famous films by the legendary actor duo. The levels are based on films such as The Right and Left Hand of the Devil with a Western scenario, the tropical island from Two Aces Trumps or one modern American metropolis (from The Miami Cops ). In a 16-bit retro look and similar to games like Final Fight or Double Dragon, you can fight your way through the levels from left to right as Bud Spencer or Terence Hill, with three different levels of difficulty. Various mini-games, such as a buggy race or beer and sausage competitions, loosen up these game mechanics. The game features a local cooperative multiplayer mode. In the single player mode, the other character is taken over by the computer, and the character can be changed at any time if desired. The playing time is around two to three hours.

development

Marcus Zölch from Augsburg, who has been an enthusiastic Spencer / Hill fan for years, has been in personal contact with Spencer since the 2000s. Zölch was also mentioned in Spencer's autobiography. He first met Hill in 2010. On October 31, 2015, to celebrate Spencer's 86th birthday, he met both of them in Rome to talk about a joint project. Spencer thought he was too old to make a film, but Zölch's suggestion of a comic series or video game aroused Spencer and Hill's interest.

In October 2015, an unofficial, raw demo was published by independent Italian developers for Windows and Mac, which Zölch then contacted. Together they developed further concepts. The game was to be financed through Kickstarter, with Zölch acting as the producer. From October to December 2016, around 212,557 euros in donations were collected, which flowed into production, mainly from fans in Germany and Hungary. With Giuseppe and Alessandro Pedersoli, Bud Spencer's son and grandson were also involved as producers in the project.

Soundtrack

Slaps and Beans received praise for its licensed original soundtrack, for example by Oliver Onions . Since the original donation target of 130,000 euros at Kickstarter was significantly exceeded, the wish of many fans for the licensed original songs of the films was also realized.

The reviews of Slaps and Beans were mixed. The charming graphic style is praised as well as the arcade atmosphere or the soundtrack, but weak controls and the German lyrics are criticized.

"The pixel duo provides pleasant nostalgia, but the weak texts and confused fights are disappointing."

- Thomas Nickel : Criticism in the M! Games

“As an ardent fan who can have a say in each of the two films, I naturally supported the Kickstarter campaign. However, even the half-baked game pisses me off. I'm not only annoyed about the unimaginative, primitive gameplay, but above all about the completely messed up German lyrics. (...) The mini-games and driving levels are also meant nicely, but they are a disaster in execution. The 'two for luck and sulfur' buggy race is unbelievably lousy, and the chase with the horned convertible from 'two strong guys' is one of the most pointless and boring things that came my way in my long playing career. Sure, there is a Bud-and-Terence bonus that doesn't completely drown the game in the waste bin, but a lot more would have been possible. "

- Kai Schmidt : Criticism at Gamestar

“Slaps and Beans is not a perfect game. But that's not a problem, because the indie title doesn't even have that claim. Rather, it's about reviving the slapstick of the beating orgies around Bud Spencer and Terence Hill and paying tribute to the heroes of that time. And that works really well. If you don't know what to do with the films, the title will probably not stay in your memory in the long term, also due to the low replay value. If you are looking for a sophisticated story, varied gameplay or a demanding beat'em-up, you better go elsewhere. Fans of the screen duo will be able to forgive the work for its shortcomings and still honor it. Quite simply because it gives them the opportunity to experience one last adventure with their two idols and to indulge in pleasant memories again. "

- David Benke : Criticism in the PC Games

“I really want to like Slaps & Beans. As a playful homage to the film duo that shaped many of my generation in their childhood, it is loving thanks to Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. The colorful, retro design with its 16-bit style fits in wonderfully and pays tribute to the films the two have made over almost 20 years. And acoustically, the licensed music by Oliver Onions, among others, immediately creates a mental cinema in which the two pull the bad guys out of circulation with steam hammer fists and slapstick cannonades. In addition, the game does not save with numerous allusions to both the Spencer / Hill films and modern celluloid strips. That the plot and the dialogues of the outrageous story are rather poor: Free - I can also accept that as a bow to the stereotypical scripts of the originals. For me the problems start with the mechanics. Like other modern sideways floggers, it is based on the classics Streets of Rage and Golden Ax. But the bottom line is that it becomes redundant here faster than with other more modern representatives. (...) Accordingly, like the films on which it is based, the game should be enjoyed in small doses. (...) With a slightly wistful fan bonus, Slaps & Beans is just enough to prevent the crash (...). "
