Dahn rock country
The Dahner Felsenland is a landscape in the district of Südwestpfalz ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). It is located in the northwest of the Wasgau , a low mountain range formed by the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges . In the Dahner Felsenland there are many rock formations of the southern Palatinate climbing area .
Geographical location
In terms of area, the landscape almost coincides with the municipality of the same name , which includes the town of Dahn and 14 villages. The Dahner Felsenland is part of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park . It is between 200 (valleys) and 400 m (mountains) high and is drained from the Lauter , which is called Wieslauter here on its upper course , to the Rhine .
tourism
The region lives from tourism and is accessed by numerous marked hiking trails. The Felsenland Youth Hostel run by the German Youth Hostel Association is in Dahn .
Attractions
In Dahner Felsenland there are 16 castles or castle ruins as well as numerous rock formations made of red sandstone , some of which are used by sport climbers . Among the castles, the Dahner Burgengruppe from Altdahn , Grafendahn and Tanstein , the Berwartstein and the Drachenfels are among the most famous. Old legends entwine around some of the rocks , such as the Jungfernsprung or the Teufelstisch . The unruly knight Hans von Trotha lived on the Berwartstein ; he led the so-called water feud against Abbot Heinrich of the Weissenburg monastery and went down in the legends of the region as a child scare Hans Trapp .
traffic
The Dahner Felsenland can be reached via the motorways 8 (from the west) and 65 (from the east), each using the federal highway 10 , which connects the two motorways. The federal road 427 ( Hinterweidenthal - Bad Bergzabern ) leads directly through the Dahner Tal . The originally planned closure of the Autobahn 8 ( Pirmasens - Karlsruhe ) through the Wieslautertal past Dahn was never realized.
Partly parallel to the B 427, as a junction from the Landau – Rohrbach railway line, the Wieslauterbahn connects the villages of Hinterweidenthal in the north and Bundenthal in the south of the Dahner Felsenland. The railway line was reactivated in 1997 for excursion traffic on Sundays and public holidays after regular passenger train operations had ceased in 1966. The Bundenthaler excursion train that starts in Mannheim , the Halt u. a. also does in Neustadt and Landau , as well as the Felsenland-Express from Karlsruhe.
