Červená Hora Castle

The Červená Hora castle (German: Rothenburg ) in Eastern Bohemia belonged to the castle system of the Bohemian national defense. Their remains are located one kilometer northwest of the homonymous municipality of Červená Hora in Okres Náchod in the Czech Republic .

location

The remains of the ruins of the Rothenburg lie on the left bank of the Aupa , in a bend in the river in the area of the Babiččino údolí ( Grandmother's Valley ). Neighboring towns are Boušín and Mstětín in the northeast, Olešnice in the east, Všeliby and Žernov in the southeast, Světlá in the southwest and Slatina nad Úpou in the west.

history

The Rothenburg was built between 1253 and 1278 during the reign of the Bohemian King Ottokar II Přemysl, together with the neighboring castles Výzmburk and Riesenburg . All three castles belonged to the castle system of the Bohemian national defense of that time and were probably built by Peter von Skalitz ( Petr ze Skalice ) and / or his sons Tas and Sezema.

The first known owner of the castle and the manor of the same name was Sezema von Červená Hora, a son of Peter von Skalitz. Other owners were Nikolaus Piskl ( Mikuláš Pískle ) from Schweidnitz and Mathias Polc. In 1372 the Archbishop of Prague Johann von Jenstein acquired Rothenburg together with his brothers Wenzel and Paul. The next owners were the brothers from Dubá on Nachod. After they divided their possessions in 1406, the Rothenburg came to Hynek the Elder. J. of Dubá.

Hynek d. J. was a supporter of the Bohemian King Sigismund . From 1420 he fought as a captain in the Silesian army against the Hussites . In this capacity he was captured in May 1421 during the defense of Jaroměř , but later released. In 1427 the Hussites besieged Rothenburg and burned it down on June 8th of that year. Since the castle had lost its original meaning since the annexation of Silesia to Bohemia in the 14th century, it was never rebuilt.

Together with the village of Červená Hora, the castle ruins came under the rule of the Riesenburg, which Siegmund Smiřický of Smiřice acquired in 1601 for his ward, the eleven-year-old Albrecht Václav Smiřický, and joined the Nachod rule .
