The castle Nové Město nad Metují (German Castle Neustadt an der Mettau ) is located on the northwest side of the market square of the town of the same name in Nové Město nad Metují in the Czech Republic.

From the fort to the castle

The founder of the town of Nové Město nad Metují , Johann Černčický von Kácov , built a fort on the northwest side of the rectangular market square in 1501 or later, which was acquired, expanded and redesigned in 1528 by Adalbert von Pernstein . From 1548 it belonged to the Stubenberg noble family from Styria , who had it rebuilt and expanded into a renaissance castle in the years 1558–1568.

After the descendants of the Protestant Rudolf von Stubenberg were expropriated after the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620, the castle and rule came to Albrecht von Wallenstein , who sold it in 1624 to Maria Magdalena Trčka von Lobkowitz , who with her husband Jan Rudolf Trčka von Lípa at Opočno Castle resided. She sold the Nové Město chateau and estate to her son Adam Erdmann Trčka von Lípa in 1628 . After he and his brother-in-law Wallenstein were murdered in Eger in 1634, Emperor Ferdinand II gave Nové Město to his Field Marshal Walter Leslie , who had been involved in the murder plot. During his reign, the castle was rebuilt in the early Baroque style by Carlo Lurago from 1655 to 1661 . The stucco work was carried out by Giovanni Battista Bianco and Domenico Egidio Rossi. At the same time, the castle tower was built and a castle chapel was built, which was painted by Fabián Václav Harovnik.

Heirs of the noble von Leslie family, who died out in 1802, were those of Dietrichstein , of whom the castle and the lordship also fell to more distant relatives by inheritance in 1858 (from Liechtenstein, von Waldstein-Wartenberg, von Lemberg). However, since these families did not reside in Nové Město, the chateau was repurposed and gradually fell into disrepair.

In 1908 the textile industrialist Josef Bartoň bought the castle, had it carefully renovated by the architects Dušan Jurkovič and Pavel Janák and modernized according to the time in Art Nouveau style. At the same time, it was equipped with important works of contemporary art. In 1948 the Bartoň family was expropriated without compensation. By way of restitution, their descendants got the castle back in 1992.

Castle garden

Around 1910, the gardens and parks of the castle were redesigned by Dušan Jurkovič. The terrace wall is adorned by 24 dwarfs from Matthias Bernhard Braun's workshop , which were acquired by the Bartoň family in 1932.
