The castle was probably built in the 11th century and was probably owned by a line of the Lords of Cygenberg from Ziegenberg Castle, about 20 km away, above Ziegenhagen near Witzenhausen , as indicated by the mention of a Dedo von Cygenberg in 1093, whose wife was a countess from Dassel was. It may even be the lost headquarters of the von Cygenberg family.
The present castle stable of the formerly small castle complex shows no more remains and is built over.
