Burgstall Strasbourg

The Burgstall Strasbourg is an abandoned medieval hilltop castle near the desert of the same name in the urban area of Landshut . Today the road to Frauenberg runs below the castle stables.

Almost nothing is left of the former castle complex. Today the Burgstall is registered as a ground monument with the number D-2-7439-0005 by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

history

Finds from the Mesolithic Age have already been made on the area of the castle stables . A settlement in prehistoric times and in the Roman Empire is also suspected here. Also in the early Middle Ages there was probably a settlement at this point, possibly also a predecessor of the later castle.

This was built on an artificially elevated tower hill to protect the nearby Episcopal Isar Bridge. The castle was therefore also owned by the Bishop of Regensburg . In armed conflicts between Bishop Konrad III. The castle complex was destroyed by Regensburg and Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1203 and not rebuilt. This fact was probably one of the most important reasons for Landshut to be founded in the following year.

description

Of the former castle complex, only the tower hill, the plateau and some ramparts can be seen today. Ceramic and brick remnants were found, which suggest that the castle was at least partially made of brickwork. To the left of today's road to Frauenberg is the old path to the castle, to the right of which a medieval road is clearly visible. The old Roman road from Verona to Regensburg, which was still used in the Middle Ages, should not, however, be based on recent findings.
