The Burgstall Stumpfbühl , sometimes just called Burgstumpf , is the remnant of a former hilltop castle on the Falken, southeast of Ittelsburg in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . Only trenches remain from the castle.
Geographical location
The castle was located on an elevation southeast of Ittelsburg, surrounded by a 60 meter long sickle-shaped neck ditch . The tower cone was protected by a moat to the south.
history
The castle was probably built in the 15th century while Diepold or Hans Zwicker was the village lord of Ittelsburg. In 1442, Veit von Eisenburg was named as the owner , who probably came into possession of the castle because the Eisenburg were related by marriage to the Rothensteiners. Veit von Eisenburg got into a feud with the knight Hans von Stadion from Ulm in 1442. The cause was probably that Veit von Eisenburg lived from the road robbery near the post and trade route Ulm – Kempten. Hans von Stadion then moved with "1000 men zuo Ros und Fuoss" against Ittelsburg and camped there for four days. After four days, Veit managed to escape during the night. The remaining defenders surrendered, the castle was captured and burned down. The castle stump is now a listed building.
