Türkheim Castle

Türkheim Castle is a castle in Türkheim in the Swabian district of Unterallgäu . Since 1983 the town hall and a museum have been housed in the "Great Castle" . The so-called "Small Castle" houses a castle café.

history

With the relocation of the Schwabegg lordship from Schwabegg to Türkheim around 1470, the place gained greater political and economic importance. From 1531, with the construction of the castle by Wolf Dietrich von Knöringen in Türkheim, a separate princely domain was created. The structural expansions and changes suggested and carried out by Duke Maximilian Philipp von Bayern-Leuchtenberg , after he had chosen Türkheim as his retirement home, are characteristic of today's appearance . Work on the palace began in 1682 under the direction of Giovanni Antonio Viscardi , who was only able to do so through the planning of François Cuvilliés the Elder. Ä. and Karl Albert von Lespilliez received its current baroque appearance around 1754 with the mighty hipped roof.

In 1685 the duke founded the Capuchin monastery and church near the castle . An archway has been connecting the two building complexes since 1687. In 1695 his wife Maurita Febronia had the so-called "Small Castle" built. After his death, the inheritance fell to his nephew, Elector Max Emanuel .

The later use of the castle as the seat of the regional and district court was followed by the current use as the town hall of the community and local museum .
