The Fliehburg Ittelsburg (also called Volksburg or Volksfliehburg ) is located on the ridge of the Falken south of Ittelsburg , near Bad Grönenbach in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria .

description

Due to the location of the Fliehburg , an attack from the south was only possible. On all other sides, the Fliehburg is protected by about 100 meters of steep slopes. A total of three walls, each with a trench in front, extend to the south. The walls were piled up with the excavation of the trenches. The entire system is around 500 meters long. The individual walls (seen from south to north) have an extension of about 250 meters, 175 meters and 75 meters. The width of the sole is around 12 to 18 meters and the height around three to five meters.

Originally the trenches were filled with thorns. Palisades or wicker fences were attached to the ramparts. The walls result in a total of three sections (see also section wall ). These sections had different uses. The first and largest section (viewed from south to north) served as pasture for the animals, the next was an arsenal and resting place for the warriors. Behind it, in the third section, were the women and children, and this also served as a storage area.

The Fliehburg is a listed building. The two castle stables ( Burgstall Falken and Burgstall Hahnentanz ) on the Falken are not related to the Fliehburg and were only built centuries later. In the nearby village of Woringen , there is also a refuge from the same period.
