The Butterberg near Bad Harzburg in the Lower Saxony district of Goslar is about 325  m above sea level. NHN high ridge of the northern Harz foreland .

Surname

The name “butter” is related to “buten” (corresponds to outside : be-outside, * baußen) (cf. “Buten und binnen”, ndl. Buiten ). Butter mountains are mountains or elevations located outside, in front of or on the edge of certain localities.

The Butterberg is located in the northern Harz foreland in the north of the Harz Nature Park in the immediate western vicinity of the northern part of the Harz National Park . It is located directly north of the core town of Bad Harzburg, to whose urban area it belongs. Its landscape descends to the north to the Kattenbach and to the Bad Harzburg district of Westerode on its west bank , to the southeast it leads over to the northern roofing of the Harz low mountain range , to the south it drops to the Stübchenbach and to the west to the Radau flowing a little beyond the federal highway 4 . In a north-westerly direction, the landscape passes through the Radau valley to Langenberg (approx.  304  m ), which is about 4.5 km (as the crow flies ) from Butterberg . The field names Am Butterberg , Butterberg , Hinter dem Butterberg and Vor dem Butterberg exist on and on the elevation .

Natural allocation

The butter mountain part in the natural environment feature unit group Northern harzvorland (no. 51) in the main unit resin edge recess (510) in the sub unit Harzburger harzvorland (510 1 ) and its partial area foothills of the northern Upper resin (510 1 .4) for natural space resin Burg-Goslar Vorberge (510 1 .40).

Protected areas

The nature reserve Butterberggelände ( CDDA no. 81496; designated 1952; 6 hectares in size) lies on the elongated ridge of the Butterberg, which is wooded in the context of a narrow strip of wood  . On large parts of the elevation, especially on its northern flank, there are areas of the Harz landscape protection area (district of Goslar) (CDDA no. 321402; 2001; 390.18  km² ).

Geology and Geopark

With its steep rock layers, the Butterberg belongs to the erection zone north of the Harz North Rim fault . It consists of limestone from the Upper Cretaceous and is part of the Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen Geopark .

Traffic and walking

Landesstraße  501 runs south and south-east past the Butterberg, coming from the west through Bad Harzburg and then to the east-northeast lying Stapelburg . For example, starting on this street or on side streets that lead through the residential areas that extend to the southern slopes, it can be hiked on paths and paths. Adventure trails run on and over the Butterberg. The European long-distance hiking trail E11 runs past Bad Harzburg and the L 501 along the northern edge of the Harz , from which there are connections to the elevation.
