Cacoal , officially Município de Cacoal , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rondônia located on the Rio Ji-Paraná , which according to an estimate from 2019 has 85,359 inhabitants. It is a center of coffee cultivation in Brazil and is therefore known as the “Capital of Coffee” (Capital do Café) .
history
After the land was opened up in 1909 by the expedition of the Cândido Rondon , a telegraph station was built in 1912 at the confluence of the Rio Pimenta Bueno and the Rio Barão de Melgaço to the Rio Ji-Paraná , also known as Rio Machado , from which the city starts Pimenta Bueno developed. Anísio Serrãno de Carvalho, who was originally from Paraíba and who worked here as a cable guard , acquired farmland further downstream from the Ji-Paraná in 1920, which he named Cacoal . The large-scale colonization of the area, with which the further development of the farmland began with the formation of an urban center around the old farm, did not begin until 1970 with settlers recruited from the population centers on the coast of the southeast .
In 1972 Cacoal was established as an administrative district of the city of Porto Velho and on October 11, 1977 it was separated from it by federal law (Lei Federal No. 6.448) as a separate municipality. The formation of the Cacoal community was completed on November 26, 1977. The municipal area was originally covered by the Amazon rainforest , which with increasing settlement and land development was pushed back to the north of the area by slash and burn and is still threatened there.
