Captain Newman is a cross between a war film and a comedy film from 1963 . The American feature film was directed by David Miller based on the novel Captain Newman, MD by Leo Rosten.
action
The neuropsychologist Captain Josiah Newman was stationed in the hospital of an air force base in the southwest of the United States during World War II . Too few staff and too few resources and medication pose serious problems for Newman and his employees. You are forced to improvise, which is what makes Corporal Leibowitz so special. He is also supported by Lieutenant Francie Corum, with whom he has a relationship, and Lieutenant Grace Blodgett, who lovingly mothers the patients.
Newman typically has six weeks to heal his patients. Otherwise they will be sent to other facilities. One of the new patients is Colonel Bliss, who suffers from a guilt complex. Bliss is not amenable to treatment and commits suicide. Corporal Tompkins considers himself a coward for not being able to save a comrade from the burning wreckage of the crashed plane. Tompkins is healed by Newman, but falls the first day after returning to duty.
Captain Winston, who fell into catatonia and hid behind enemy lines for 13 months, is brought in. Newman manages to heal the man with the help of Mrs. Winston. Newman, Leibowitz, Corum and Blodgett continue to treat their patients, including Italian prisoners of war, knowing that they will have to return to the front lines after treatment.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films complained that the film was a film adaptation of a novel, which oscillated somewhat undecidedly between dramatic tension and comic entertainment.
The film magazine Cinema, on the other hand, praised the fact that the film was well performed and, despite all the humor, serious. Excellent actors keep the balance between seriousness and comedy.
Bosley Crowther of the New York Times wrote that the film's greatest flaw is that it jumps between serious and comical situations to the point of monotony.
Awards
The film was nominated several times for film awards, but could not win any. In 1964 , there were Oscar nominations in the categories of Best Supporting Actor (Bobby Darin), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound ( Waldon O. Watson ). Four nominations for the Golden Globe Award ( best film (drama) , best actor (drama) , best supporting actor and best film that supports international understanding ), two nominations for the Laurel Awards (4th place for Bobby Darin for the top male Supporting Performance and 5th place for Tony Curtis for the Top Male Comedy Performance ) and a nomination for the WGA Award of the Writers Guild of America followed.
background
The film premiered on December 25, 1963. In Germany it was first shown in cinemas on October 16, 1964.
