List of Carcassonne based standalone games
The list of Carcassonne-based standalone games includes all 15 games based on the Carcassonne placement game. Like Carcassonne, most of them were developed by the game designer Klaus Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück Verlag . The majority of the games are placement games and use the same mechanism as the original game with modified rules and add additional pieces or new game material. Only two variants reinterpret the game principle and implement it as a dice or card game .
Placement games
A total of 13 of the Carcassonne-based games are placement games like this one. In them, too, the players create a map together by joining square cards. With playing pieces (called followers or meeples ) they can capture cities, streets, monasteries and meadows for themselves and get points when the respective area is completed or the game ends because there are no more unobstructed playing cards available. In the games based on Carcassonne, these areas are rated differently, receive additional or modified functions, enable new game processes and are designated differently. Also, not all of these four areas are found in all games. In the game New Land there are no paths or meadows, but plains, mountains and water, all of which are similar to the cities known from Carcassonne. In the game The Children of Carcassonne, on the other hand, there are no meadows, cities or monasteries, only paths. These simplifications reduce the recommended minimum age to four years. In the game The Castle there are limits given by the scoring track in which the game tiles must be placed. There are other differences in the scope of the games. Many have more game tiles than Carcassonne and have additional game components. In contrast to Carcassonne with its ten large and numerous mini-expansions, expansions have so far only appeared for a few of the games based on Carcassonne. A mini-expansion with a small amount of new game material was released for each of the three games The Jäger and Collector , Carcassonne - South Sea and Carcassonne - Gold Rush , and a large, extensive expansion was only released for Carcassonne - Star Wars Edition .

In 2002 the Carcassonne variant Die Jäger und Collector appeared , which thematically is set in a prehistoric time.
The players take turns drawing from the general pile. All meadows, rivers and forests must continue. Followers may be placed in an empty area. Alternatively, a hut may be placed on an unoccupied river system, i. H. There are no huts there, but there may be other followers. The majority in an area is the one who has more followers in the area.
Fishermen are scored when the river is closed by lakes or springs. He gets as many points as sections and fish in the adjacent lakes. A collector receives two points per forest section. If there is at least one nugget of gold in the forest, whoever completed it may draw a card from the bonus pile. If rivers and forests are not completed, no points are awarded. Finally, the river systems and meadows are scored. For each fish in the river system, the player with the most huts receives one point. For each game, mammoth or aurochs, the player with the most followers receives two points. Every saber-toothed tiger in the meadow pulls off a game.
There are various special cards for bonus cards. In any case, the place of worship gives the player an absolute majority on the meadow. The fire drives away all saber-toothed tigers . The mushrooms earn two points extra if the forest is closed.

King and Scout (mini expansion)
The game can be supplemented with the five cards from the Carcassonne mini expansion King and Scout .
Each player draws one card, with two players two. The shaman makes it possible to withdraw followers from unfinished projects. The other cards can alternatively be placed to draw. The scout may reject the first card and instead draw a new one, which must then be taken. The hunter on the jetty stands in both meadows without connecting them. The dugout canoe always earns the player one point. There are rivers in the system as many points as fish in the largest lake. The henchman also counts once as a fisherman. Agriculture earns one point per meadow card. No hunters may be there or deployed later.

Die Burg is a game for two people by Reiner Knizia .
Within a given castle wall, which also serves as a scoring track, the castle cards are laid out alternately, starting at the given starting spaces on the scoring track. The players can place their followers on streets, towers, houses or courtyards according to the usual Carcassonne rules. Successful completion of these areas earns the player points as usual. Only the paths have to be continued, but may end at the wall. If you complete the buildings, you get one point per card for the houses, two for towers. If you bring a path to the end there is one point per card, there is a well along it, two points. Structures that are not completed usually do not earn a point. Courtyards earn three points per market stall.
Furthermore, there are wall tiles on the corners of the irregular counting strip, which is based on the castle wall. These may be recorded when you get there with your meeple on the scoring track. These allow you to count buildings that have not been completed, double the points for your own finished building, enlarge the “hall”, earn more points per market or generally earn five points. A special feature of the game is the “ Palas ” pawn , which marks the largest house at the end of the game. At the end of the game, the player in the largest hall receives as many points as cards would be needed to fill the largest remaining hole. In the extreme case this would be 17 points.

The Carcassonne variant The King 's Builder is thematically set at the time of King Solomon . The aim of the players is to expand Solomon's empire, i. H. To build cities, to build roads, to promote sheep breeding and to take over the transport of the ark to the temple complexes. The gameplay is similar to the usual rules, but some elements have been changed or added. This applies, for example, to the temples as new landscape areas as well as the use of prophets and the ark of the covenant to gain additional points. This variant was not published by Hans-im-Glück-Verlag, but by Uljö-Verlag.
The English-language version of the game is named The Ark of the Covenant ( German The Ark ) and is based on the conquest of the Israelites . Except for minor deviations, the rules are the same as in the German version. The game is offered by the US manufacturer Inspiration Games .

In this variant of the game, delivered in a wooden box, residential areas, streets and markets are built, which gradually grow together to form a city. Here, too, the skillful placement of followers in the respective areas enables you to gain points. The wall and tower elements, which surround the city in the course of the game, offer a special feature. This will reduce the city's ability to expand and areas can be closed. In addition, the players are allowed to place their followers on the wall elements as guards. Each guard “guards” a row of city cards and at the end of the game receives additional points for each depicted building in this row.

Neues Land is a game from 2006 that was developed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and Leo Colovini . The people of Carcassonne become robbers, sailors or explorers. Your job is to explore grasslands, mountains and seas. The player can now determine the point in time of a scoring himself, which can result in direct awarding of points. The illustrations were done by Fabio Visintin and Stefano Mondini .

The game Mayflower is about the settlement of America. The game title refers to the ship of the same name, the Mayflower . The course of the game follows the well-known principle. Areas and structures to be completed are paths, towns, farms and plains, which correspond to the streets, towns, monasteries and meadows known from the basic game. The construction of the landscape begins on the east coast of America , which is presented as a game board with ten starting spaces. As a new element, the surveyors who follow the trek west come into play. Settlers standing east of the surveyor will be removed in the course of the game.
There are also analogies in Mayflower to other Carcassonne variants. The final scoring of settlers on the plains is similar to the final scoring of The Hunters and Gatherers , in which the owner of a level receives one point for each animal there. Trading posts adjacent to the paths give additional points such as the oases from The King's Builders . Flags in cities correspond to the coats of arms from the basic game. Similar to the guards from Die Stadt , the surveyors influence a “row” of the landscape and score additional points.
The English-language version is called New World ( German New World ).

This version of Carcassonne for two to four players is aimed particularly at young players aged four and over. The 36 cards are placed in turn on the landscape picture. Paths are shown on each map, which means that the maps can be combined with one another without restrictions. Furthermore, the children of Carcassonne are shown on the cards in the four colors of the playing figures. If a path is closed according to the known rules, the players place their playing figures on the children shown. As soon as a player has placed all of his pieces, he has won.
There are two different editions of this game (Schmidt games no. 48192 and 48199). The second edition corrects unclear wording in the game instructions and problems with the representation of the paths, as well as the uneven distribution of the game figure colors on the cards. The second edition was reissued in 2017 at the Nuremberg Games Fair under the name "Carcassonne Junior" (Schmidt Spiele No. 48270).
The English version is titled My First Carcassonne .

The variant of Carcassonne, published in October 2013 for two to five players, ages seven and up, plays thematically in the South Seas and is the first game in the Carcassonne around the World series . It contains 73 landscape cards, 24 ship tiles, 10 large and 10 small goods tiles, 19 fishing boat tiles and four game figures (islanders) in five colors each. As usual, the players lay out cards and place their figures on them in order to receive goods through closed areas. The footbridges are comparable to the streets of Carcassonne, the islands with the cities, markets with the monasteries and the sea areas in between resemble the meadows. If a jetty, an island or a sea area is completed, the player receives goods according to the number of symbols depicted in this area - mussels for closed paths, bananas for islands and fish for sea areas. When a market is completed, you can deliver the goods you previously purchased to ships and thus earn points. Carcassonne South Pacific

Friday (mini expansion)
The mini-expansion for Carcassonne Südsee , also published in 2013, contains six new landscape cards and a wooden figure “Friday”. It is named after Robinson Crusoe's companion in Daniel Defoe 's novel of the same name .
The landscape tiles of Carcassonne - Südsee are divided into ten stacks of seven cards each and an eleventh with the last two cards. Now a card is always drawn from the front of the pile. When a pile is used up, a week is over and one of the six cards in the expansion is drawn and “Friday” is placed on it. Little by little, a small island emerges. When all six island parts have been created, the player whose turn it is now places “Friday” on an island part of his choice. Each part of the island grants the player a special bonus.

In November 2015, the version based on Star Wars was presented. The idea for this adaptation came straight from Disney , the rights holder of Star Wars. The game for two to five players, ages seven and up, includes 76 game tiles and five different colored game figures, which are assigned to five different Star Wars characters , which in turn belong to different Star Wars factions, using special stickers :

The gameplay is similar to that of the original Carcassonnes, the asteroid fields are comparable to the cities, the trade routes with the streets and the planets are similar to the monasteries. However, there is no play element comparable to the meadows. As a further change to the original Carcassonne, it was introduced that dice are rolled around asteroid fields and trade routes occupied by several characters, and so “battles” are fought. Already occupied planets are fought with the dice as soon as a player places a new, adjacent tile. It is also possible to play with four players in factions, i.e. two against two.

This variant of Carcassonne presented in October 2015 for two to five players, ages seven and up, contains 73 landscape tiles and 33 harvest chips (5 apple, strawberry, pumpkin, sunflower and grain each , and 8 scarecrow ), plus five pawns and two stables each in the colors yellow, red, green, blue and black. The rules are similar to the basic game and the 2nd expansion .
Streets are called paths here - the pawn on them is called a hiker, the fields resemble cities - the pawns on them are called farmers. "Harvest symbols" can be shown on the cards with fields. For closing a field, you receive harvest chips according to the "harvest symbols" shown on it. At the end of the game the aim is to form sets from the five different harvest chips; the scarecrow act as a joker . As an innovation, instead of placing a pawn, you can move on a pawn that has already been played and thus get points.
The stables - similar to the farmers in the original Carcassonne - are placed on the meadows. However, different rules apply here: Stables may not be placed on adjacent cards and there are extra points for the animals shown in some meadows.
In this game, Hans im Glück Verlag is cooperating with the Bavarian State Ministry for Health and Care and its children's health campaign “ICH.MACH.MIT.”. The special edition has a circulation of around 30,000 pieces, of which around 21,000 pieces are sold through retailers. The rest is distributed by the Bavarian Ministry of Health to health authorities , all-day schools and lending libraries .

The variant of Carcassonne Carcassonne - Amazonas presented at the SPIEL '16 in Essen in October 2016 is about exploring the South American jungle and the eponymous Amazon . It was developed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, the illustrations are by Vicki Dalton. After Carcassonne - South Seas and Carcassonne - Gold Rush, it is the third part in the Carcassonne around the World series . Like most Carcassonne variants, it can be played by two to five players aged seven and up.
The game contains 84 landscape tiles (including 15 simple Amazon tiles and four double-sized Amazon tiles), a starting board (2 × 4 tiles in size) and a total of eight game pieces in five colors (yellow, red, green, blue and black). The characters consist of five meeples, two camps and a boat. The meeples correspond to the followers of the original Carcassonnes. The camps can only be set in the jungle and are comparable to the farmers and meadows of the original Carcassonne. Between the jungle there are villages (analogous to the cities) and tributaries, comparable to the streets of the original Carcassonnes. The mighty Amazon, from which the tributaries branch off and into which they can flow again, meanders between all of them. On this the players' boats move downstream. This can be done on the one hand if no other game figure has been placed after placing a tile or by means of a boat symbol, which is located on the tributary tile. If an Amazon tile is placed, a special Amazon scoring takes place; the further a player has driven his boat on the Amazon, the more points he receives. The scores of the jungle, villages and tributaries are comparable to those of meadows, cities and roads of the original Carcassonne, but are increased by special fruit symbols (villages and jungle) and symbols of animals living in the jungle such as toucans , monkeys and butterflies . Caimans and piranhas swimming in the Amazon increase the score of the Amazon.

In October 2018, the game Carcassonne - Safari was published as a variant of Carcassonne at SPIEL '18 . This version is about a safari in Africa and was developed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, the illustrations are by Anne Heidsieck. After Carcassonne - South Seas , Carcassonne - Gold Rush and Carcassonne - Amazonas it is the fourth part of the series Carcassonne around the World . Like most Carcassonne variants, this version can also be played by two to five players aged seven and up.
The game contains 72 landscape tiles on which savannahs, animal paths, bushland and baobab trees as well as various animal species are depicted, a starting board (3 tiles in size), a scoring board, 50 animal tiles or waterhole parts and the game pieces. The playing figures each consist of six meeples in five colors (yellow, red, green, blue and black), an elephant each in the player's colors as a counting stone and two ranger vehicles. The game is essentially the same as the basic game, with landscapes of savannah and scrubland with animal paths and baobab trees standing alone . The meeples may be placed on animal paths as well as in bushland, they are placed on baobab trees. The completed animal paths and bushland areas are scored based on the number of different animals on or on these tiles. There is also the possibility of improving the rating by giving away animal tokens. The animal tokens can also be used to dig and expand water holes and also get points for this. The baobab trees provide animal tiles when a meeple is placed on them and when they are completely surrounded by other tiles.

The variant Carcassonne - The dice game , published for the tenth anniversary of Carcassonne in March 2011, consists of nine special dice, a pen and a notepad. The metal packaging has the shape of a follower. It contains nine cubes with four sides each showing a schematic representation of city districts, one side showing a follower and one side with a catapult.
The player rolls the dice up to three times. If catapults appear, the dice are left out and may no longer be played. If three followers are rolled, he may keep one die and double his points on the next turn. This round does not count. Dice that have already been collected may not be rolled again. Cities are built from the sides of the die, according to known rules. Fixed points are awarded according to the size of the largest city. The end of the game is reached when someone has reached 42 points or rolled nine catapults in one turn.

reception
Right from the start, the question arises about the meaning and use of the offshoots and extensions. The publisher has received letters asking for more material on Carcassonne . In an interview with Michael Knauf, the publisher Bernd Brunnhofer stated shortly after the appearance of Jäger und Collector that a publisher had to make a profit because not all of the publisher's games were self-sufficient, which is why other games in the Carcassonne series are published. The argument is also made that demand is being met and the games are being enthusiastically received. Moritz Brunnhofer, the son of the publisher's founder, also wants to maintain product maintenance because "the relationship between effort and benefit [...] is better".
