Carl Friedrich Schmidt (Lieutenant General)

Carl Friedrich Schmidt (born May 13, 1792 in Berlin ; † December 28, 1874 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and director of the War Academy .

Life

He was the son of the Prussian sergeant Friedrich Schmidt and his wife Friederike, née Dames.

Military career

Schmidt joined the Prussian Army as a volunteer at the beginning of the wars of liberation against Napoleon on April 1, 1813 and was employed as a hunter in the 8th Leib-Infantry Regiment . He took part in the sieges of Maubeuge , Landrecies , Rocroi and Givet as well as the battles at Möckern , at the Katzbach and at Leipzig . In the meantime promoted to Second Lieutenant and transferred to the 2nd Reserve Infantry Regiment, Schmidt received for his services in theBattle of Waterloo the Iron Cross II class. After the peace treaty he remained in France with the mobile army corps until 1818 and was ordered to take up the country .

This was followed by further commands from April 6, 1819. First to the 2nd Department of the War Ministry , then to the Topographical Office and the Great General Staff . On March 30, 1823 Schmidt was transferred to the General Staff of the VII Army Corps in Münster . In the meantime promoted to major , he was transferred to the General Staff on March 30, 1838, where Schmidt was appointed head of the theater of war on April 4, 1844. In this position, promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 31, 1846 , he was employed as chief of the general staff of the VII Army Corps on April 11, 1848. As a colonel , Schmidt was reassigned to the General Staff on December 22, 1849 and served as the head of department until November 19, 1851. He was then appointed director of the Upper Military Examination Commission and promoted to major general on March 22, 1853 .

On September 18, 1856, Schmidt was finally appointed director of the General War School, which was renamed the War Academy in 1859 during his service. Since June 25, 1857, he was also a member of the study commission for the division school. On January 12, 1858 he had received the character of Lieutenant General and on May 22, 1858 he was awarded the patent . For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Schmidt was Deputy Commanding General of the VII Army Corps in July 1859 . King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded Schmidt the star of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on October 3, 1859, in recognition of his many years of service .

Schmidt received his retirement on July 1, 1860 with the statutory pension , but was still a member of the study commission for the war schools from December 14, 1860 to September 23, 1861 .

After his death he was buried in the Matthäikirchhof .

Schmidt married Wilhelmine Pauline Auguste Schmale (1818–1907) on April 3, 1848 in the Berlin garrison church . She was the daughter of the salt cash register inspector Johann Heinrich Schmale. The marriage remained childless.
