Carl Schiller
Carl Georg Wilhelm Schiller (born May 23, 1807 in Braunschweig ; † June 28, 1874 there ) was a German art and cultural historian and private scholar . He was the founder and first honorary director of the Braunschweig Municipal Museum .
Life
The son of the pastor at the Braunschweig St. Ulrici Church , Johann Heinrich Schiller († 1828), attended the grammar school in Blankenburg , then the Martineum and from 1827 the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. At his father's request, he studied theology in Halle from 1828 and in Göttingen from 1830 . Following his real interests, he dropped out of theology studies and studied art history in Berlin from 1831 . It was in 1839 at the University of Jena to the Dr. phil. did his doctorate and then pursued art and literary studies as a private scholar in his hometown.
Foundation of the Braunschweig Municipal Museum
In the run-up to the city's millennium in 1861, preparations were made to found a collection of cultural and artistic achievements by the citizens of Braunschweig. To this end, Schiller founded a collectors' association in 1859, which brought together objects worth preserving in the Duchy of Braunschweig. The association, based on the old goods dealers of the time, the “Kleiderseller”, known as “ The honest clothing sellers of Braunschweig ” still exists today. The municipal museum was opened on May 1, 1865 in the Neustadtrathaus under Schiller's honorary direction. Schiller left his extensive private collection to the museum.
Art lover and sponsor
He was president of the Braunschweig Art Club and belonged to the Art Association founded in 1832 . He campaigned for the erection of a memorial for Lessing , who died in Braunschweig in 1781 , whose grave was found again by Schiller in the Magnifriedhof in 1833. His extensive correspondence with the sculptor Ernst Rietschel has come down to us on the project. The Lessing monument cast by Georg Ferdinand Howaldt was unveiled in 1853. Schiller promoted the erection of the equestrian statues of the dukes Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand and Friedrich Wilhelm as well as the Heinrichsbrunnen on the Hagenmarkt .
For his services, Schiller received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion from Duke Wilhelm .
Schiller died in Braunschweig in 1874 and was given a memorial in the Magnifriedhof there.
