Carl Wulf Ulrich Freiherr von Stenglin , also Karl Wulf (f) Ulrich von Stenglin , Karl Wolf Ulrich von Stenglin , Baron Charles de Stenglin (born August 12, 1791 in Kiel , † March 15, 1871 in Geneva ), was the last canon in Principality of Lübeck .

Life

Carl von Stenglin came from the older line of the patrician and noble family of Stenglin . He was a son of the Mecklenburg Chamberlain Conrad Philipp von Stenglin (* 1749 in Hamburg , † 1835 in Ratzeburg ) on Plüschow (until 1802) and Renzow and his wife Luise, née. von Stralendorff (1751-1838).

On June 4, 1802 he received a canon prebend in the Lübeck cathedral chapter , which Hans Detlef von Hammerstein renounced in his favor. This made him the last canon before the secularization of the Lübeck bishopric in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803. Like all prebends existing at that time, Stenglin retained his privileges and income for life. Since the 1860s he was the only canon still alive.

On January 24, 1822, he married Countess Karoline von Hessenstein (* February 16, 1804, † March 18, 1891 in Montreux ) in Kassel , the tenth child of the Hessian Landgrave and (from 1803) Elector Wilhelm I from his relationship with Karoline von Schlotheim . The couple lived mainly in Geneva , where Carl von Stenglin died in 1871. All three sons became kuk officers: Wilhelm von Stenglin (born January 9, 1823 in Kassel) fell as a lieutenant colonel in the battle of Trautenau in 1866 , Emil Wolff von Stenglin (1827–1889) was last Rittmeister and Oswald Wolff von Stenglin (1834–1888 ) last captain.
