Carlo Francesco Maria Caselli OSM (born October 20, 1740 in Castellazzo Bormida , Italy , † April 19, 1828 in Parma ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Carlo Francesco Caselli entered the Servite Order in Bologna in 1755 . He studied theology in the seminary of San Marcello in Rome and graduated with a master's degree in theology . On September 24, 1763 he was ordained a religious priest of the Servites. He then worked in Reggio nell'Emilia , Turin , Florence and Rome as a teacher of philosophy and theology in seminaries of his order. On April 14, 1769 he took over the post of master of theology in the convent of San Marcello. Caselli died on April 19, 1828 and was buried in the Cathedral of Parma .

Promotion to the general superior

In 1781 his order appointed him vicar general , in 1785 he became provincial of Piedmont and in 1786 vicar (governor) and visitor of the province of Lombardy . In 1786 he was appointed General Procurator of his order. On 26 May 1792 it chose the General Chapter to the Superior General , an office he held until the occupation of Rome in 1798 by French troops.

Inquisitor and Cardinal

In 1793 Caselli was appointed advisor to the Congregation for the Holy Rites and on October 30, 1795 appointed inquisitor in the Sacra Congregatio Romanae et universalis Inquisitionis . When there were concordat negotiations between the Holy See and France from 1800 to 1801 , the Apostolic Plenipotentiary Archbishop Giuseppe Spina chose him as his theological advisor. On February 23, 1801 Caselli was appointed cardinal in pectore and took part in the negotiations in France in this capacity. On February 22, 1802 he was appointed titular archbishop of Side , with simultaneous appointment as coadjutor bishop of Parma . Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Spina and the co-consecrators Archbishop Benetto Fenaja CM (Titular Archbishop of Philippi ) and Bishop Simone de Magistris CO ( Cyrene ) consecrated him on April 4, 1802 as bishop. On August 9, 1802, Pope Pius VII (1800-1823) appointed him cardinal priest of San Marcello and now publicly elevated him to the rank of cardinal. This was followed on May 28, 1804 by the appointment as Archbishop ad personam of Parma. Cardinal Caselli took part in the conclave to elect Pope Leo XII in 1823 . (1823–1829) and was co-consecrator of Bishop Giuseppe Guzzetta as titular bishop of Lampsacus .

Apostolic Advisor and Legacy

From November 2, 1804 to May 16, 1805, Cardinal Caselli accompanied Pope Pius VII to the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor . He also took part in the coronation of Napoleon I as King of Italy on May 26, 1805 in Milan . In spring 1810 he was represented at the wedding of Napoleon with the Austrian Princess Maria Luise as the representative of the Vatican . From June 17 to August 5, 1811 he led the negotiations for the release of Pope Pius VII, who had been detained in Savona since 1809 . His last diplomatic mission on January 25, 1813 was to participate as apostolic legate in the negotiations for the Concordat in Fontainebleau . After the fall of Napoleon I, he returned to his bishopric in Parma and became the personal advisor to Empress Maria Luise .
