Carnivàle / episode list

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list of Carnivàle episodes contains all episodes of the US television series Carnivàle , which were produced and broadcast from the beginning of the series on September 14, 2003 until its early cancellation after two seasons and a total of 24 episodes on March 27, 2005.

Original concept and background

Carnivàle was originally designed for six seasons (three times two seasons), each pair was referred to as a "book" and should play between 1934 and 1945. Because of a low audience, Carnivàle was canceled after only two seasons. These two seasons make up the first book and cover the years 1934 and 1935. The second book (seasons three and four) would have played between 1939 and 1940 and the third book (seasons five and six) in 1944 and 1945, right up to the end of World War II and the Trinity Test .

The Carnival breakpoints through the southwestern United States play an important role in the series, with many episode names consisting of the location of Bens and the Carnival. The only consequence of which is named after a location of Brother Justin, The River ( Rudere on land ) in the first season.

Season 1 (2003)

Each season is introduced by a spoken monologue by the dwarfed manager Samson, who sets the mythological framework for the plot.

“Before the beginning, after the great war between heaven and hell, God created the Earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man… and to each generation was born a Creature of Light and a Creature of Darkness… and great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil. There was magic then. Nobility. And unimaginable cruelty. And so it was until the day that a false sun exploded over Trinity, and man forever traded away wonder for reason. "

- Prologue from the pilot

“Before the beginning, after the great war between heaven and hell , God created the earth and chose this clever monkey as ruler, whom he called human. And in every generation lived a figure of light and a creature of darkness . Large armies clashed at night in the ancient war between good and evil . There was magnanimity and magic and incredible cruelty. Yes, that's it. But then the false sun rose over Trinity , and man has forever exchanged his knowledge of miracles for reason. "

Season 2 (2005)

The second season also begins with a spoken prologue:

“On the heels of the skirmish Man foolishly called the war to end all wars, the Dark One sought to elude his destiny… live as a mortal. So he fled across the ocean, to an empire called America ... but by his mere presence, a cancer corrupted the spirit of the land. People were rendered mute by fools who spoke many words, but said nothing ... for whom oppression and cowardice were virtues ... and freedom, an obscenity. Into this new land, the Prophet stalked his enemy ... until, diminished by his wounds, he turned to the next in the ancient line of light. And so it was that the fate of all mankind came to rest on the trembling shoulders of the most reluctant of saviors. "

- Prologue from the first episode of the second season

"After the skirmish that man foolishly called" the war that will end all wars, " the sinister tried to evade his fate ... and to live as a mortal. And so he fled across the ocean to a realm called America ... but his very presence, like a cancer, corrupted the spirit of the land. People were silenced by fools who spoke many words but said nothing ... for whom cowardice and oppression were virtues ... and freedom, something indecent. And in the heart of darkness, the Prophet stalked his enemy ... until, weakened by his wounds, he turned to his neighbor in the ancient line of light . So it came about that from now on the fate of humanity had to rest irrevocably on the trembling shoulders of the most unwilling of all saviors. "

After learning exactly how Ben's healing powers work, Samson forges a plan to support Ben in the fight against Brother Justin: Justin should be lured onto the Ferris wheel, where he would be at the mercy of Ben. Meanwhile, on Justin's orders, Sofie is locked in an abandoned barn by Stroud after she discovered Justin's tree tattoo, which reveals her connection to Carnival and Ben. In the barn, she experiences a series of visions in which numerous storylines of the series are brought together and 'clarified'. Among other things, she connects Justin with the tattooed man who raped her mother and recognizes him as her father. The previous riddle “every prophet in her house” now becomes: “This is your house”.

Supported by the 'Carnies', the decisive confrontation between Ben and Brother Justins begins on the Carnival grounds. When Justin and Iris get into the Ferris wheel, Ben begins a mass healing as Benjamin St. John. The life forces that Ben gives the healed are withdrawn from Justin, who writhes in severe convulsions on the Ferris wheel, but can finally free himself. With black eyes, he kills many of his followers and his foster father Norman in a maddened state while he fights his way to Ben armed with a sickle. He follows Ben into the cornfield from Ben's visions. When it comes to a duel, Ben is injured in the arm and stomach, but he still manages to ram his knife blade into the center of the tree tattoo and kill Justin with it.

In the meantime, Jonesy has eliminated Stroud and frees Sofie, who, however, apparently switched to her father's side, surprisingly shoots him. The next morning, the Carnies find Justin and Ben, who is still alive, and bring him back to camp. Libby mourns Jonesy and does not want to leave without her husband, but in the end the Dreifuss family remains united. Sofie, the “omega” of her dynasty (cf. mythology of Carnivàle ), finds Justin in the cornfield and takes over the powers of her dead father. While Iris watches as all the grain comes into the field, the Carnival leaves New Canaan and moves on. The last shot shows Ben taking the place of management ...

Location information

Carnival locations
  • Mintern is a fictional location in the San Joaquin Valley in San Benito County , California, near Salinas . When Brother Justin loses his faith in God in the middle of season one, he leaves his home in Mintern and moves to the wilderness of the San Joaquin Valley near Kingsburg . After visiting Norman in the hospital at the beginning of season two, Brother Justin and Iris drive home and drive past the tree ; Justin calls the place "New Canaan", the future place of his temple. New Canaan is also located in San Benito County, south of Salinas. The final episode of the second season is named New Canaan, CA on the DVDs .
  • Babylon is a fictional city in Texas . It became a ghost town after a mine collapse in 1921 killed all workers except Scudder. There is a historical reference to a real Babylon, Texas in Navarro County .
  • Los Moscos is a real area in Chihuahua , Mexico , near the southwestern border of New Mexico . Its meaning as the title of the first episode of the second season has never been clarified. However, it is known that Ben and the Carnival spent most of their time in Loving, New Mexico. Carnivàle suggests that Loving has nothing in common with Loving, New Mexico in the southeastern part of the state, near Texas, as the (fictional) city is said to be less than a mile from the Mexican border in western New Mexico, thematically and geographically probably near Los Moscos.
  • Lincoln Highway is the first road through America, designed in 1912. During the episode, the Carnival stops in Wyoming , near the Nebraska border , but the episode is incorrectly named Lincoln Highway, UT on the DVDs.
