Cecil (family)
The Cecil family (originally also spelled Sitsilt , Syssell , Seisyll or Seisill ) is an English noble family of Welsh origin.
Two lines of the family are particularly prominent, namely the Cecil of Exeter and Cecil of Salisbury lines . The lines come from the two sons of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley from († 1598), who under Queen I. Elisabeth Lord High Treasurer was.
His eldest son, Thomas , was made Earl of Exeter in 1605 , and his descendant, the 10th Earl , was made Marquess of Exeter in 1801 . The family seat of this line is Burghley House in Northamptonshire , which was built under the 1st Baron Burghley.
The younger son, Robert , was made Earl of Salisbury in 1605 and acquired Hatfield House in Hertfordshire as a family seat; his descendant, the 7th Earl , was made Marquess of Salisbury in 1789 and his descendants, who added the family name to "Gascoyne-Cecil" in 1821, played leading political roles in the British Conservative Party in the 19th and 20th .
