Challenge de France féminin 2003/04

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The competition for the Challenge de France féminin in the 2003/04 season was the third play of the French football cup for women's teams . Participation was only compulsory for women in the first and second leagues.

Defending champion was FC Lyon , who won the cup again this year; Lyon were thus in all three previous finals, of which the women had only lost the first. For the defeated finalists from USCCO Compiègne it was the first time they took part in a final for the French Cup for women’s teams.

The competition was held in the classic cup mode; This means in particular that the respective fixtures were drawn without seed lists or a performance-based or - from the round of 16 - regional pre-sorting of the clubs from all clubs still in competition and only one game was played at the end of which a winner had to be determined (and be it by a penalty shootout  - an extension in the event of a tie after 90 minutes was not provided), which then qualified for the next round, while the loser was eliminated. Home rights were also determined by lot for each match - with the exception of the final, which took place in a neutral place at different locations every year - but with the restriction that clubs that have to compete against an eleven playing at least two league levels higher automatically have home rights got.

After completing the qualifying rounds organized by the regional subdivisions of the FFF regional association , eleven of the twelve first division clubs intervened in the round of 32 - the only exception was the CNFE Clairefontaine , which the FFF allowed to participate in the national championship, but not in the cup competition, with a special permit . The background for this ambivalent attitude was also the pressure from several second-class clubs, for which this team had already blocked a place in the league.

Special

Two of the four teams in the semi-finals could not necessarily be expected: Compiègne was first division, but was already relegated at this point and had only been able to prevail on penalties in the two previous cup rounds. And Besançon only played in a regional group in the third highest league level, but had previously eliminated a first division (Juvisy) and a second division (Vendenheim). In addition, none of the women who did not belong to Division 1 had succeeded in advancing that far in the two previous Coupe de France events . In the clash between these two outsiders, the higher division women again needed the decision by penalty shoot-out in order to qualify for the final.
