The Kandertal Railway (KTB; Alemannic : Chanderli ) is a private museum railway through the Kandertal in the south-west of Baden-Württemberg . The 13-kilometer branch line connects Haltingen on the Rheintalbahn with Kandern and overcomes a difference in altitude of 77 meters.

history

The Kandertal Railway was put into operation on May 1, 1895 by a consortium consisting of Vering & Waechter , Mitteldeutscher Creditbank and Moritz von Cohn . On April 1, 1899, the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Betriebsgesellschaft AG (DEBG) took over the Kandertal Railway , and on April 26, 1963, the Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs AG (SWEG).

The main customers in the initially not inconsiderable freight traffic were the surrounding quarries for the dispatch of stones. For this purpose, there was initially a 900 mm narrow-gauge railway in Kandern , later a cable car and several sidings along the route. The number of people transported on the Kandertal Railway remained very low, in particular because of the parallel bus services operated by DEBG and later by SWEG for many years. Another disadvantage was the lack of direct connections to Lörrach and Freiburg (Breisgau) .

The workshop and management were based in Kandern.

After a dam slide at Wollbach on July 4, 1983 , traffic between Wollbach and Kandern was stopped, and passenger traffic officially on December 31, 1983. Goods traffic to Wollbach was stopped on April 1, 1985. On April 14, 1985, the route became formal shut down.

The Kandertalbahn special-purpose association then took over the infrastructure, which has been operating a museum railway here since 1986 together with Kandertalbahn eV - the owner of the vehicles .

Sometimes the train is still used today to transport wood. There are ideas to reactivate the railway line in the medium term and to integrate it into the Basel S-Bahn network.

Museum operation

Since 1969 there has been a museum operation through the Eurovapor association , initially with historic SWEG vehicles. After the SWEG ceased operations, museum operations have been continued since 1986 by the Kandertal Railway Association . The vehicles are owned by the Kandertalbahn Association .

The season traditionally starts on May 1st and runs until the end of October. Every Sunday there is three commute between Kandern and Haltingen, on May 1st , on Ascension Day and to the horse market in Kandern, additional pairs of trains run with the diesel multiple unit . Special trains can also be ordered - both with steam and diesel.

The wine express , which runs twice in May, has now achieved cult status . Wine and other delicacies are served here at every station .
