Chaos is an action thriller from 2005 about a bank robbery and the subsequent hunt for the perpetrators. Directed by Tony Giglio , who also wrote the screenplay. The main characters are Jason Statham , Ryan Phillippe and Wesley Snipes .

action

In Seattle , Detective Conners and his partner York accidentally kill a hostage-taker and his female hostage. After the incriminating testimony of her colleague Callo, Conners is suspended from duty and York fired.

Half a year later, a group of gangsters raided a bank and took all those present hostage. When one of the hostages sounded the alarm, the bank robbers shot him. The police arrive and surround the bank. The leader of the bank robbers, who calls himself Lorenz, demands Detective Conners as a negotiating partner. Its boss, Captain Jenkins, reinstates him and entrusts him with the management of the operation. He puts the beginner Dekker at his side - as a partner, but also as a minder.

Since the hostages are in acute danger, Conners orders that the power to the bank be cut off and that the SWAT team storm them. But the bank robbers have placed explosive charges at all entrances, which detonate when the access takes place. In the resulting chaos, the bank robbers mingle with the hostages storming out of the building and can escape undetected.

With no shortage of cash, the FBI believes that the perpetrators were targeting an Arab sheik's locker . While listening to the tapes, Dekker notices that Lorenz often used terms from chaos theory . When the investigative team says goodbye after a beer in the pub , Conners only leaves the exact invoice amount on the table. Since Dekker wants to round up the amount by a tip, he exchanges the $ 10 bill that Conners left behind for a $ 20 bill.

With the help of recordings from the television cameras, the police officers can identify and arrest one of the gangsters. They find money with him, but it did not come from the bank robbery. Using a special scent mark on the banknotes, they find out that the money came from the police evidence room and that Callo had picked it up there a fortnight earlier. When the investigative team visits Callo in his apartment, they find him killed, as well as plans from the bank and information about the sheikh. They discover that one of the bank robbers tampered with a computer in the bank. His fingerprints lead to a hacker, but they can no longer question him because Lorenz shoots him and escapes after an exchange of fire.

Dekker uses a trick on a suspect to find out that the gang wants to meet that evening. When Conners breaks into the house, there is an exchange of fire and a devastating explosion before he can leave the building. Left to his own devices, Dekker continues the investigation. A police computer specialist discovers that the bank robbery was just a cover for a much bigger coup. A computer virus that the gangsters installed in the bank at the terminal of the branch manager transferred small amounts of around one billion US dollars from a large number of accounts to foreign accounts.

Dekker discovers that the officer in the evidence room forged Callo's signature. When confronted, he confesses that Lorenz is actually Conner's partner York. Dekker can track him down in a restaurant at the cargo port, where there is a shooting and York is shot by Dekker.

The case seems to have been solved, but then Dekker notices due to the noticeable smell that the banknote that he previously took from Conners must also have come from the evidence room. He realizes that Conners is still alive and has worked with the bank robbers. Dekker finds a book about the chaos theory by James Gleick and, following a hunch, looks for a booking in this name at the airport. While he is walking around the airport in search of Conners, he calls him, disguised and watching him, on his mobile phone. In flashbacks, seemingly incoherent events combine to form a pattern, as described in Chaos Theory, and show how Conners and York engineered and carried out the coup with former convicts. Callo was defamed and punished for his false testimony. Although Dekker knows all this now, he cannot prevent Conners from taking off in the private jet with the stolen billion as loot.

Stephan Sigg from Cineman saw in the film "besides a lot of shooting and explosions also something to puzzle over" and judged that it was "entertaining fun for fans of action films".

His colleague Matthias Schmieder, on the other hand, criticized the representation of the colors. “Right from the start, the extremely poor, as hardly any colors, are noticeable.
