Charles de Bourbon, duc de Vendôme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles de Bourbon (born June 2, 1489 in Vendôme , † March 25, 1537 in Amiens ) was Count of Vendôme , Soissons , Marle and Enghien and Baron of Condé-en-Brie , Montoire , Lavardin , Mondoubleau and Épernon since 1495 .

origin

Charles was the eldest son and main heir of François de Bourbon and his wife Marie de Luxembourg († 1547), daughter of Pierre II. De Luxembourg. Through his father he came from the younger branch of the House of Bourbon , which was of royal Capetian origin, descended from King Louis IX. the saint . His mother came from the French branch of the former imperial family of the Luxembourgers .

Life

Charles took part in the Italian wars against the Habsburgs and was in 1507 by King Louis XII. entrusted with the governorship of Genoa . On May 14, 1509, after being knighted , he fought in the Battle of Agnadello against Venice and then took part in the capture of Cremona and Padua . In January 1515 he was given the hereditary duke title combined with the peerage for Vendôme by the new King Francis I. In September of the same year Charles fought in the Battle of Marignano , as a result of which France was able to take the Duchy of Milan . In 1518 he took over the government of Picardy .

In 1523 Charles was able to make personal profit from the king's rift with Duke Charles III. Beat de Bourbon-Montpensier . This was the head of the older branch of the Bourbons and was therefore closest to the throne after the royal house of Valois . Due to the betrayal of the Duke of Bourbon, Charles moved to the position of the first prince of the blood , a circumstance that was later important for his grandson Henri de Bourbon .

After the king fell into captivity of Emperor Charles V in the Battle of Pavia in 1525 , Charles was a member of the ruling council. In 1536 he successfully horrified Péronne , besieged by the emperor , defended by Catherine de Poix ( Marie Fouré ). Shortly afterwards he died on Easter Sunday in Amiens following a fever . The duke was buried in the collegiate church of Saint-Georges in Vendôme.

Marriage and offspring

Charles married Françoise d'Alençon on May 18, 1513 in Châteaudun . She was a daughter of Duke Renés d'Alençon and thus a member of a branch line of the French royal family Valois. From her father she received the vice-county of Beaumont-au-Maine as a dowry, which was upgraded to a duchy in 1543. After the heirless death of her older brother, Duke Charles IV , Françoise would have become the legal heir to his extensive property. However, this was withheld from her by King Francis I, because he made her brother jointly responsible for the heavy defeat at Pavia. Instead, the Alençon inheritance was transferred to the widow of the duke and sister of the king, Margaret of Navarre . By marrying Antoines de Bourbon with Jeanne d'Albret , Margaret's daughter from her second marriage, this inheritance dispute was to be defused. Françoise died on September 14, 1550 in La Flèche .
