- from the Romanized spelling " Karl " of the Old High German word karal "the capable", "the free",
- from the French diminutive extension -otte (male: -ot ).

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the name Charlotte was often among the 20 most popular girls' names of a given year in Germany. Its popularity plummeted in the mid-thirties. In the mid-eighties, the opposite trend started and the name became more common again. In 2016, the name was ranked 12th in the frequency statistics.
