Karl
Karl , also in the spelling Carl , is a male given name .
Origin and meaning
Karl is derived from the old high German karal ("man, husband, lover"). which in turn goes back to the Germanic * karlaz or * karilaz ("free man; little, young man; old man", actually a diminutive of * karaz "man"). Carl is considered a Latinized spelling and is documented as Carles in the 16th century (from Latin Carolus , cf. French and English Charles ). The development of meaning from the old Germanic to the old high German word can be explained by a caressing usage that led to “my little man” to “dear husband”. A diminutive of Karl is Karlchen and is used as a nickname .
