Christian Rosskopf

Christian Roßkopf (born January 13, 1930 - February 2, 2020 ) was a German politician ( SPD ) who served as Lord Mayor of the city of Speyer for 25 years from 1969 to 1995 . He had been married since 1956 and had two sons. After his political career, he worked for the savings banks, the cooperative system and in development aid for many years.

Life

Studies and offices in the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate

Christian Roßkopf studied law and political science in Mainz and Freiburg and received his doctorate in 1956 in Freiburg with a subject in French law. He completed his legal training in 1957 with the qualification for judge's office . For the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate (Protestant regional church) , he initially worked as a church lawyer and finally as a legal senior church councilor in the Protestant regional church council for the Palatinate .

Political career

Christian Roßkopf had been a member of the SPD since 1962 . Elected Mayor of Speyer in 1968, he held this post after being re-elected in 1979 and 1989 to 1995. He was also active in the chairmanship of the Rhineland-Palatinate City Council for just as long . In addition to his main office as Lord Mayor, he was a member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities and was involved in administrative modernization bodies, media supervision and the Sparkassenverband Rheinland-Pfalz.

City partnerships and municipal projects at European level have brought him into contact with many countries on the continent - from Norway to Portugal and from France to Russia. His official work (for the OECD ) has taken him to the USA several times.

Activities in retirement

After retiring from active service, he worked as the arbitration board of the savings bank organization in Rhineland-Palatinate for 15 years.

He worked in Poland , Mauritania and Ethiopia for the “ Senior Expert Service ” and as an appraiser for the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and on behalf of the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) .

His interest was in the cooperative system (including on the supervisory board of the non-profit building cooperative Speyer until 2011) and the exchange between science and politics, business and administration in the Johann Joachim Becher Society, which he chaired for six years as well as the chair of the resulting foundation .
