Christian from Bar

Christian von Bar (born May 5, 1952 in Hanover ) is a German lawyer and university professor . In 1987 he founded the Institute for International Private Law and Comparative Law in Osnabrück and in 2003 he founded the European Legal Studies Institute (ELSI) at the University of Osnabrück , of which he has been director ever since. He was also chairman of the Study Group on a European Civil Code from 1999 to 2010.

Life

Christian von Bar studied law from 1970 to 1974 at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg , the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and the Georg August University in Göttingen . He passed his first state examination in 1974 in Göttingen. This was followed by a doctorate in Göttingen in 1976 , the second state examination in Hanover in 1977 and the habilitation in 1979 in Göttingen. As an LL.M. -Student von Bar from October to December 1979 at the University of Cambridge . After substitute professorships at the Ruhr University Bochum (SS 1980) and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (WS 1980/81), he has been university professor (C 4) at the University of Osnabrück since April 1, 1981 , where he holds a chair for civil law , European private law, international private law and comparative law.

In 1987 von Bar founded the Institute for International Private Law and Comparative Law in Osnabrück, of which he was director until 2003. The Institute for European Legal Studies (ELSI) was founded by von Bar in 2003. Christian von Bar was dean of the law faculty in Osnabrück in 1988/89 and has been chairman of the examination committees of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice since 1988 . On October 1, 2019, he took over the office of Vice President of the State Judicial Examination Office in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice.

Von Bar is a founding member of the European Law Institute , a non-profit organization devoted to legal research and the improvement of European law with the aim of constructively accompanying European integration in the field of European law.

honors and awards

Since 1993 von Bar has been the recipient of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation . In 2006 he received the Lower Saxony State Prize . The University of Leuven (2003) and the University of Tartu (2007) awarded him an honorary doctorate , von Bar was awarded an honorary doctorate by Linnaeus from the University of Uppsala (2007). In May 2010, von Bar received his fourth honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki . The University of Katowice awarded von Bar the University's Gold Medal of Merit in October 2011. In the same month von Bar received the title of professor (e. H.) At the Jan Dlugosz University of Czestochowa . In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Katowice, and in 2013 Bar received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warmia-Masuria in Allenstein . In 2016 he received an honorary doctorate from the Serbian University of Novi Sad .

Furthermore, von Bar is a member of the Academia Europaea (2016), Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy (2000), corresponding member of the Académie internationale de droit comparé (2003), member of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law , Texas (2004) and Honorary Master of the Bench , Gray's Inn , London (1993).

In 2018, Bar was awarded the First Class Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Study Group on a European Civil Code

From 1999 to 2010, von Bar headed the Study Group on a European Civil Code, a network of legal scholars from across the European Union in the field of comparative law and European private law. Christian von Bar was the responsible head of all session weeks of the Study Group on a European Civil Code in 15 different European countries.

Personal

Christian von Bar comes from the von Bar family and is of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. He was used as the son of Otto von Bar and his wife Marie Elisabeth von Bar. von Schwartz, b. Reichardt, born. His grandfather was Ludwig von Bar . With his wife Ingard von Bar, b. von Prittwitz and Gaffron he has three sons. He has been a knight of honor since 1986 and a legal knight of the Order of St. John since 2002 , has been a board member of the Johanniter relief community in Osnabrück since 1989 and was a member of the board of trustees of a Johanniter hospital from 1990 to 1992. He is a member of the Corps Bremensia Göttingen .
