Christoph von Carlowitz (born December 13, 1507 on the Hermsdorf estate near Dresden , Electorate of Saxony , † June 8, 1578 in Rothenhaus , Kingdom of Bohemia ) was an important electoral councilor in Saxony and captain of Joachimsthal in Bohemia.

Life

Christoph came from the noble Carlowitz family, who lived near Dresden . His nephew was Georg von Carlowitz . At the age of 12 he began studying in Leipzig , where he was taught by the famous humanist Petrus Mosellanus . After four years he went to Basel, as a student of Erasmus von Rotterdam , then to the law school in Dole and finally to Besançon . His erudition was praised from a young age.

He came to the Electoral Saxon court at the age of 22 and was soon entrusted with important missions. Between 1530 and 1570, Christoph von Carlowitz was one of the most influential figures of the Reformation era at the Dresden court . At first he was the councilor of the Dukes Georg and Moritz of Saxony . 1535 bailiff in the office of Zörbig and then in 1543 in the district office of Leipzig . On April 19, 1544, in Speyer , he received the imperial approval to unite the coat of arms of the noble von Ziegelheim family .

Carlowitz was involved in the secret negotiations that led to Moritz's alliance with the Kaiser. 1552 he was negotiator for the Saxons at Passau contract . In recognition of his services, he was elevated to the rank of Four Knights of the Holy Roman Empire in Innsbruck on January 13, 1552 . Later he served as a councilor to Elector August and from 1557 as captain in Joachimsthal under Emperor Ferdinand I.
