Mottram was in the finals of the junior tournament of the Wimbledon Championships in 1972 , where he was defeated by Bjorn Borg . The following year he won the junior tournament of the French Open . In the course of his career he was able to win two individual titles on the ATP Tour , in 1975 in Johannesburg and in 1976 in Palma . Between 1977 and 1982 he was in five other final rounds. Mottram was also successful in doubles, with five titles in eleven finals. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1983 with position 15 in singles and position 164 in doubles.
His best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments were participation in the round of 16 at the French Open, the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open . He never took part in the Australian Open . In the doubles competition he reached twice the third round of Wimbledon and once the third round of the US Open. In the mixed competition he stood at the side of Florenta Mihai in 1980 in the round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Mottram played 35 singles and six doubles games for the British Davis Cup team between 1975 and 1983 . His record is positive, he won 31 out of 41 games; including 27 singles and four doubles. He celebrated his greatest success with the team with the final of the world group in 1978. In the preliminary rounds he won all of his games and beat Yannick Noah ( France ) and Ivan Lendl ( Czechoslovakia ) , among others . In the 1: 4 final defeat against the USA he got the only point by defeating Brian Gottfried , he clearly lost his game against John McEnroe .
