Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach is a German-Italian fictional film by the French director Jean-Marie Straub from 1968. The director wrote the script together with his partner Danièle Huillet . It deals with the most important stages in the life story of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach , as told by the English writer Esther Meynell in the form of fictional diary sketches by Bach's second wife.

Table of contents

The film consists almost exclusively of recordings of soloists (vocals, piano, organ), orchestras and choirs, which were recorded in historical locations and show people in historical costumes. In between are recordings of original manuscripts and scores, letters and other documents. Bach himself and his second wife appear in the picture, but they hardly act or not at all. An actual action is consequently not recognizable. Developments and the flow of time can only be taken from the chronological sequence of the pieces of music, from the detailed written or acoustic quotations from documents. The quotations, mostly spoken off- screen, are written in the language that Bach and his contemporaries used.

Production notes

The film, which was made within eight weeks between August and October 1967, premiered on February 3, 1968 in Utrecht as part of the Cinemanifestale. The German premiere took place on June 30, 1968 in Berlin (West). The film has been running in Germany since March 14, 1969.

The music comes from the protagonist himself and is interpreted by the instrumental ensemble Concentus Musicus Wien under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt , the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under the direction of August Wenzinger and the Hanover boys' choir . The outdoor shots were taken in Eutin ( Schleswig-Holstein ), Hamburg , Leipzig , Lübeck , Lüneburg , Nuremberg and Stade , among others .

Reviews

“The life of Johann Sebastian Bach in an unorthodox representation by Jean-Marie Straub. The film is neither a traditional musical biography nor a cultural film about Bach. Rather, he discovers the moving elements of a busy life in the historical and refers, not least through structure and style, to its present significance. A film that is unusual in its intellectual and formal concept. "

“Film about the work and the most important stages in the life of Johann Sebastian Bach. Straub's second film consists primarily of static and completely expressionless recordings, which more than insufficiently illustrate a tape that is certainly interesting for Bach fans. "
