Clouds is a Death Doom band founded in 2013 by Daniel “Klepsy” Neagoe . The singer and multi-instrumentalist is the only permanent member of the group that is considered a supergroup of extreme Doom Metal . The music is considered Melodic Death Doom, in which influences from Funeral Doom and different styles of Doom Metal are taken up.

history

Clouds was originally founded by Daniel "Klepsy" Neagoe to release an album and then to end the project. The first line-up was the Finn Jarno Salomaa from Shape of Despair and Rapture as guitarist, the Belgian producer Olmo "Déhà" Lipani from Imber Luminis , SLOW , Yhdarl and Deos and the Greek keyboardist Kostas Panagiotou from Pantheist , Towards Atlantis Lights , Wijlen Wij , Aphonic Threnody and Crippled Black Phoenix . Clouds also cited the participation of Pim Blankenstein from Officium Triste and Jón Aldará Hamferð as guest appearances.

After the publication of Doliu, the band developed into a highly regarded and perceived supergroup with constantly changing guest, live and session musicians. Neagoe retained primary responsibility for the lyrics and songwriting.

As a reason for the establishment and for the continuation of the project, he gives his own loss and the associated grief, as well as the acceptance and acceptance by the audience.

"I guess people wanted more. And because the pain didn't stop here, I decided to continue with it all. And it will continue even after the pain is gone. Somehow both us the musicians and the people will always want to remember the reason why we keep close people in our hearts and cherish their memory. "

“I guess people wanted more. And after my pain didn't go away I decided to move on. Even if the pain is gone, I guess I'll keep going. Somehow, both us musicians and the people, will always want to deal with why we hold important people in our hearts and keep their memories. "

- Daniel “Klepsy” Neagoe quoted from Aleks Evdokimov

occupation

Many of the musicians involved over the years are considered greats of Death and Funeral Doom . In addition to Neagoe, musicians from the sister project Eye of Solitude also participated in publications and international appearances by Clouds, as did instrumentalists and singers from groups such as Saturnus , Swallow the Sun , Officium Triste , Hamferð , Funeral , Witch Mountain and Alcest . Negatoe explains the cooperation as family get-togethers, friendships and shared emotional and creative ideas. A commercial impetus, however, is negated by him.

The following table lists the musicians involved in Clouds' releases alongside Daniel “Klepsy” Neagoe.

Clouds' music is a crossover of Melodic Death Doom and Funeral Doom with influences from Epic Doom or Gothic Metal, depending on the release . Neagoe's texts on loss and grief are considered constant in the group's content . The music press, mainly webzines, received the group's publications mostly positively.

In addition to the content and musical context of the band's oeuvre, all album titles begin with a "D". Neagoe mentions a conceptual consideration behind the choice and expresses an emotional background which, with the request for understanding, he deliberately does not elaborate on.

Most of the albums and singles appeared as music downloads via Bandcamp and as self-published CDs. Occasionally, clouds cooperated with labels. The debut was released on Domestic Genocide Records and some of the subsequent albums on The Vinyl Devision as LP. In addition to many publications, there was also a strictly limited first edition in a hand-made wooden box.

style

The band itself classifies their music as Melodic Death Doom. In band presentations and reviews, the music is classified as a combination of Melodic Death and Funeral Doom. According to the webzine Doom-Metal.com , Clouds combines different influences and familiar elements from well-known artists of Death and Funeral Doom who are involved in the band to create a homogeneous sound of their own. The result is that this group's music is atmospheric, slow, and sad. Stefan Nordström from Soliloquium describes the music for his website Deathdoom.com as a combination of the slow tempo and the long pieces of Funeral Doom with the melodies and dynamics of Melodic Death Doom. In his opinion, the pieces are “monumentally sad”. The music pairs the violin and piano sounds of My Dying Bride with the plaintive atmosphere of Funeral Doom, formulated by Steel Druhm for Angry Metal Guy. Other reviewers also point to Gothic Metal and Epic Doom as nuances of the music.

content

Clouds is designed as a concept volume. The band addresses “immeasurable loss and agonizing heartache” on every release. Neagoe describes the style as "simple music" whose conceptual cohesion and success is based on the expression of grief from the loss of familiar and loved ones. This central theme unites the participating musicians as well as the entire discography of the project. He attributes a cathartic and therapeutic function to music for himself and the listener. Soon enough, Clouds also became the Volksband.

reception

In the band description written for the webzine Doom-Metal.com it is pointed out that Clouds lives up to the demands of the band and their membership as a supergroup and that the group plays the tragically beautiful music expected of them. Greg Kennelty described Clouds for Metal Injection as "by far one of the best bands out there." Cody Davis, who wrote the weekly Funeral Doom Friday column for Metal Injection, regularly dealt with Clouds as part of his column and praised the development of the band as "incredibly exciting to watch." He rated the international involvement and music of the project as a " constantly evolving homage to loss and saudade . "

"Over the years, each album, single, or EP sees the band further dive into sadness. Daniel Neagoe and company work through the tower of losing and missing loved ones. With each repetition, they refine their sorrow into a cathartic and atmospheric doom metal that rivals the classic 90's Peaceville era. "

“With every album, every single or every EP, the band plunged deeper into grief over the years. Daniel Neagoe and band work their way through the turmoil of losing and grieving loved ones. With every step they refine their grief in a cathartic and atmospheric Doom Metal that competes with the classic 90s Peaceville era. "

Reviews of individual albums also emphasize the individual achievements of the musicians as well as that of the group as a cohesive band. A special role is assigned to Neago's songwriting. The debut Doliu , released in 2014, was described by Peter Mildner for Metal.de as “an excellent menu, which surprisingly, despite the top-class cast, was mainly cooked according to the recipe of just one man: EYE OF SOLITUDEs Daniel Neagoe tailored an album for his colleagues, that binds the respective nuances of their main bands pointedly, without neglecting a common taste. "For Doom-Metal.com , Chris Hood described Doliu as a perfect and flawless album, comparisons abound and awarded the highest rating with ten out of ten possible points. Other reviews praised the release as “dark and melancholy music” of high quality. To hear the album means "to lose oneself on a hard journey through paths of devastation, fear and despair." Departe from 2016 was just as enthusiastically received . Although it was criticized that the album lacks "the Überersong that the debut still had", critics such as Stefan Nordstöm for Deathdoom.com or TV for Terra Relicta declared it to be one of the albums of the year. And Luigi 'Gino' Schettino described Departe for Metal.it as an album without weak points, and Gabriele Zolfo for Metalized as one with hardly any remaining weak points. Kris Clayton also praises Departe in his review written for Doom-Metal.com, but suspects that Departe is falling short of his possibilities.

"'Departe' carries on where 'Doliu' left off. The songs are universally gorgeous and evocative, the depth of the sounds instantly takes you on a journey if you close your eyes and let it carry you."

Departe begins where Doliu ended. The songs are universally beautiful and impressive. If you close your eyes and let yourself drift, the depth of the sound will immediately take you on the journey. "

- Kris Clayton for Doom-Metal.com through Departe

The EP Destin received little attention in relation to the albums. In the reviews for the Dutch Zware Metalen and the Belgian Grimm Gent, Destin was still declared a flawless album and one of the best releases of the year. The press reacted accordingly to Dor , published in 2018 . Dor has received as much praise from Cody Davis for Metal Injection as in other reviews. In addition to the rating it was the best album of the year, it was said that Destin is a catharsic emotional experience. With Durere , which appeared in 2020, the positive response continued. In a review written for Neckbreaker, Anne called it "an album that is very, very personal, but which almost everyone can identify with." Kieran described Duerer for the Blessed Altar Zine as "one of the most emotional albums" ever.
