The Codex is a paper manuscript with 83 leaves. The 17th century foliation counts the 69 sheets with text. The four empty sheets between sheets 34 and 35 were not counted and, like the empty sheets in front and behind, have modern counting.

The sheet size is between 14.4 and 15 cm in height and between 8.5 and 9 cm in width. A writing space of 14 × 7–8 cm is described with 16–28 lines per page. The written form is a two-handed writing , most of the pages are autographs by Count Palatine Elisabeth von Pfalz-Lautern; a second scribal hand can be found on pages 24r – 27v and 60r / v.

In contrast to many other private prayer and devotional books, this manuscript has no decorative elements and is completely unadorned.

The parchment binding was made in Rome in the 17th century.

origin

In the inventory of the Vatican Library that Friedrich Wilken , the librarian responsible for returning the Codices Palatini germanici , was available in 1816, Cod. Pal. germ. 9 listed as missing. Instead, he was given Elisabeth's devotional book, which has since been given under this signature. Elisabeth was the daughter of the Saxon Elector August (1526–1586) and from 1570 the wife of Count Palatine Johann Kasimir (1543–1592), who was the administrator of the Electoral Palatinate from 1583 to 1592 as guardian of Friedrich IV .

Most of the texts are written by Elisabeth herself; The writing language of the manuscript is High German with East Central German and North Bavarian forms.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.
