Colchicum pusillum is a species of the genus autumn crocus ( Colchicum ) in the family of colchicaceae (Colchicaceae).
description
Colchicum pusillum is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 6 to 12 centimeters. This geophyte forms sprouts as persistence organs. The 3 to 8 leaves appear at flowering time. They are linear and measure 80 to 110 × 1 to 5 millimeters.
The 1 to 6 flowers open in a star shape. They are light pink-purple to white in color. The tips measure 10 to 20 × 1.5 to 3 (4) millimeters. The stamens are white, only their base is yellow-orange. The anthers are purple-black, brownish-black or gray-brown in color, rarely yellow, and 1.5 to 3 millimeters long.
The flowering period extends from October to November (January).
Chromosome number
In Crete, populations with triploid (2n = 27) and those with hexaploid (2n = 54, 58) chromosome sets were found.
Occurrence
Colchicum pusillum occurs on islands in the southern half of the Aegean Sea and on Cyprus. It has been proven on Kythira , Andros , Paros , Naxos and Astypalea , on Crete , the islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula , Karpathos and the neighboring islands of Armathia , Kasos and Saria as well as on Rhodes , Chalki , Symi and Tilos . In Cyprus it is proven from all parts of the country. The species grows in dry phrygana , on clay surfaces and on cultivated land at altitudes from 0 to 1400 meters.
