The league was founded in 2008 by the nine clubs that have won the Spanish championship at least once in their club history . These were the following teams: Real Madrid , FC Barcelona , Atlético Madrid , Athletic Bilbao , Valencia FC , Real Sociedad , Deportivo La Coruña , Betis Sevilla , Sevilla FC . Due to the success of the championship, it was decided to increase the number of participating clubs to 20 for the 2011 season. The only condition for admission to the league was ranking on the all-time table of the Primera División . The following eleven teams were added: Espanyol Barcelona , Real Saragossa , Celta Vigo , Real Valladolid , Sporting Gijón , Racing Santander , Real Oviedo , CA Osasuna , UD Las Palmas , Málaga CF , RCD Mallorca . For the 2012 season there was another change by shortening the field of participants to twelve clubs and dividing them into two groups of six. At the same time the competition became more international by integrating FC Porto from Portugal and Club America from Mexico into the championship. In the 2013 season the field of participants was set to ten teams and in 2014 it was reduced to eight teams.

The league's players are veterans, former professional football players who have played for their respective clubs in the Spanish football leagues . The ten teams are divided into two groups of five. In this group stage, each team plays once against each opponent within the group. The clubs that are in the first four places in the group table at the end of this regular phase qualify for the quarter-finals of the playoff phase. The playoff pairings are drawn. The winners of this knockout phase are determined in just one game in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. The winner of the final is the master of the Liga Fertiberia .

In 2008, at the same time as the championship was introduced, the Copa de España was launched. In KO phases with only one decisive game, the winner of the cup competition is determined in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Since 2009 there has also been the Supercup , in which the champions of the Liga Fertiberia and the winners of the Copa de España fight for the title. If both titles fall on the same club, the vice-cup winner can compete against the champion.

history

prehistory

As early as 2002, a Christmas tournament was organized in which the veterans of Real Madrid , Atlético Madrid , Betis Sevilla and FC Barcelona faced each other and which the royal team won. Due to the great interest of the audience, the tournament was repeated from 2004 to 2007 under the name Torneo de Reyes . There were also local tournaments in the Seville and Valencia area , as well as sporadic games among veteran teams, which were grouped under the name Fútbol Indoor Tour . This indoor soccer tour project finally led to the start of the Liga Placo game operations in 2008 .

The first years

Liga Placo Fútbol Indoor kicked off on January 11, 2008. The first season was dominated by Deportivo La Coruña when they managed to win the double by relegating Real Madrid to 2nd place on both occasions. This duel between the veterans of the Super Depor and the Quinta del Buitre was to characterize the fight for the various titles in the first three years. In the 2010 season, Deportivo La Coruña repeated the double. In the meantime, Real Madrid won the Supercup twice and the Copa de España once . Only once did FC Barcelona manage to snatch a title from the two teams when they won the championship in 2009. To everyone's surprise, Sporting Gijón won the title in 2011, their first year of participation . In 2012 Real Madrid celebrated their first championship title by beating FC Barcelona 7-1 in an " El Clásico " final. In the 2013 season, the team from Celta Vigo was able to surprise positively and win their first title. As the only Portuguese representative to date, FC Porto won the championship title unbeaten in 2014.
