history

The city was named after the politician and war hero Davy Crockett , who camped near what is now the city on his way to the Battle of the Alamo . This place was near an early railway line. A wealthy Tennessee family donated this land to the city and then renamed it Crockett . The city was officially incorporated into the county and state in 1837. The following year the first post office was built. In 1839 the city was invaded by two Indian tribes. During the civil war , the city was a training center for conscripts.

In 1872 the city was connected to the railroad traffic, which also made it possible to use the local wood deposits and transport them to regional markets. In 1885 the city had 1200 inhabitants. The following year the first school for black women opened and remained in operation until 1972. Lignite mining started in 1904 and reached its economic peak in 1910. Wood resources were exhausted by the 1920s. By 1936 the population grew to 4,500. While the population in the rest of Texas fell steadily during the Second World War , they increased in Crockett, in 1960 there were already 5,000 inhabitants.

In the 1960s, one of the first road rings in the United States was built around Crockett. After this was completed, the local economy experienced an upswing, as numerous new retail spaces were available along the routes.
