Cushing is a City City parish in Nacogdoches County, East Texas . It is located on the northwestern edge of the county near the county line with Rusk County . The name of the city comes from Edward Benjamin Cushing, an official of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, whose route network was the reason for the establishment of the town. For a long time, Cushing was a local center of the East Texas timber industry and had a population of 579 in 2016.

Just like large parts of Nacogdoches County, the area around Cushing is also characterized by a slightly hilly, largely forested landscape. The municipality covers an area of ​​almost 3.3 square kilometers, which consists exclusively of land. The local climate varies between hot summers and mild, cool winters . The most important road connections are State Highway 204 , which runs from east to west and through the town, and Farm-to-Market-Road 225, which runs northwards . The place owes its foundation to the routing of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad . The first foundations were laid in 1902. A post office was established in the same year . In 1904, regular passenger traffic began on the railway line . The rail link opened up the northern corner of Nacogdoches County for the timber industry. Due to its rail connection, Cushing advanced to become a dispatch center that supplied the numerous sawmills in the region. In the 1920s, the city had a bank , hotel , weekly newspaper , 28 businesses, and an estimated 600 residents. With around 1,500 residents, the population peaked in 1925. Due to the Depression and the increasing deforestation of the surrounding areas, it fell sharply in the 1930s to a level of 473 residents in 1940. In the following decades, the village managed to increase this low again. However, the number of local businesses fell from 37 in 1965 to 7 in 1990.
