Plan of the temple (see text)

The Dainichi-ji ( Japanese 大 日 寺 ) in Itano ( 板 野 町 ) in Tokushima Prefecture with the Go Kokuganzan ( 黒 巌 山 ) and Henjōin ( 遍照 院 ) is a small temple that faces the Tōji direction ( 東 寺 派 ) of Shingon Buddhism heard. The temple is located on the northern edge of the town halfway up a mountain range and is the fourth temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route in traditional counting .

history

Priest Kūkai is said to have come to this area at the age of 42, i.e. in the year 816, and stayed overnight. As a reminder, he carved a 5.5 cm high figure depicting Dainichi Nyorai, from which the temple name is derived. However, over the years, the temple deteriorated more and more.

The reconstruction took place at the end of the 17th century. The princes of the Awa province , the Hachisuka , sponsored the temple, especially the 5th, Hachisuka Tsunanori ( 蜂 須 賀 綱 矩 ; 1661–1730), generously supported the repair work during the Hōreki era (1751–1764).

The attachment

You enter the complex through the temple gate ( 山門 ; 1), which is designed as a tower gate , here with an unusually open upper floor that serves as a bell tower. Ahead you can see the main hall ( 本 堂 ; 2). A corridor is connected to the "Hall of the temple founder", the Daishidō ( 大師 堂 ; 3). In the corridor [4] are the 33 Kannons that are worshiped in Shikoku temples . They come from the Edo period and were donated by believers.
