Daniel Márcio Fernandes (born September 25, 1983 in Edmonton , Alberta ; called Dani ) is a Portuguese - Canadian football player . He is without a club in mid-2017.
Career
society
Fernandes started playing in the second team of FC Porto as a goalkeeper . After a short time at Celta de Vigo , where he was also part of the second team, he joined the then second division SSV Jahn Regensburg at the age of 19 in the 2003/04 season ; also here he should be used in the second team, which played in the Bayernliga . But after the goalkeeper position was already occupied with the players Klaus Seißenberger and Andreas Neumeier, he was not used. Afterwards, thanks to some contacts in Greece , Fernandes switched to PAOK Thessaloniki . Initially only employed on a trial basis, the then coach Aggelos Anastasiadis recognized his talent and helped him to get a permanent contract.
In 2005, Fernandes was promoted to number 1 by new coach Giorgos Kostikos. Although the media and fans were amazed, it soon became apparent that this was the right decision. By being caught between the posts in almost every game - both the league and the Greek Cup - he helped ensure that the 2005/06 season did not go entirely down. PAOK Thessaloniki managed to qualify for the 2006/07 UEFA Cup despite many problems both on and off the pitch.
In the summer of 2006 there were rumors that Fernandes was on the wish list of several clubs, such as B. Chelsea or Manchester United . However, Fernandes said he was very happy with his career at PAOK Thessaloniki. He extended his contract until 2008.
For the 2008/09 season Fernandes moved to the Bundesliga for VfL Bochum . At the beginning of his time in Bochum he was the goalkeeper here before he was ousted by Philipp Heerwagen in May 2009 . In September 2009 Fernandes was finally downgraded to number 4 by interim trainer Frank Heinemann .
On January 18, 2010, Fernandes was awarded to Iraklis Thessaloniki until the end of the season . Fernandes also played on loan for Greek clubs the following season. In June 2011 his contract with VfL Bochum was terminated. He then joined the Romanian first division club CFR Cluj . In January 2012 he moved to FC Twente Enschede .
In summer 2013 it was awarded again to OFI Crete in Greece . On Crete he was able to oust the previous number one Iosif Daskalakis in November 2013 and kept the regular place in the gate until the end of the season. After the loan ended, Twente agreed a new loan deal with the Greek first division club Panthrakikos in the summer of 2014 . There he only had four missions before he returned to Enschede at the end of 2014. After several positions in the United States, the Norwegian first division club Lilleström SK announced the signing of Fernandes in January 2017. He has been without a club since a positive doping test in April 2017.
National team
From 2002 to 2003 Daniel Fernandes completed several games for the Canadian U-20 national team , but then decided on the Portuguese senior team.
In November 2006, Fernandes was appointed to the Portuguese senior team for the first time . He made his debut on June 5, 2007 in the friendly against Kuwait , which ended 1: 1 (0: 0). He was substituted on for Quim in the 66th minute and conceded the goal to equalize in the 88th minute with a directly converted free kick from around 26 meters. His second international match was in the friendly against Finland , when he came into play in the 60th minute for goalkeeper Eduardo in the 1-0 (0-0) win . Fernandes was appointed by national coach Carlos Queiroz as a goalkeeper in the 23-strong Portuguese squad for the 2010 World Cup , but was not used as a substitute goalkeeper.
