Daniel Kinyua Wanjiru (born May 25 or 26, 1992) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the half marathon and marathon disciplines.

Career

The first entry registered with the IAAF shows a time of 1:02:53 h at the Nairobi Half Marathon 2010. In the following years, Wanjiru was able to continuously improve his performance and won the premiere of the Karlsbad Half Marathon in 2013 for the first time outside the borders of Africa.

In 2014 Wanjiru first undercut the one-hour mark in the Prague half marathon . In the second half of the season he prepared for his first marathon and was able to win the test run at the half marathon as part of the Wachau Marathon with a sovereign advantage of over a minute. He finally made his debut at the Frankfurt Marathon , where he took first place in the U23 age group in 2:08:18 hours and overall seventh place.

In 2015 he started with a second place in the prestigious RAK half marathon , in which he left Eliud Kipchoge, who dominated this year, behind him in 1:00:06 h and finished just one second behind winner Mosinet Geremew . One and a half months later, he won the Prague half marathon in 59:51 minutes and improved his best time from the previous year by 7 seconds. At the Hamburg half marathon , Wanjiru started as the favorite, but could not finish the race.

At the Prague Half Marathon 2016 he was able to defend his title with a new best time of 59:20 minutes. With a victory at the Amsterdam Marathon in a new course record time of 2:05:21 h, which is also the tenth fastest time in the annual best list at the end of the race, Wanjiru also made it into the international top group over the marathon distance at the age of 24.

Like some of the world's best Kenyan marathon runners, Wanjiru is under contract with the Dutch agency “Volare Sport”. He lives in Embu, Kenya .

Doping ban

In mid-April 2020, Kinyua was temporarily suspended by the independent AIU integrity commission of the World Athletics Federation due to irregularities in the blood passport.
