Darien is a city and also the county seat of McIntosh County in the US state of Georgia with 1975 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Darien is located about 90 km south of Savannah at the mouth of the Altamaha River in the Atlantic Ocean .

history

In 1721 the British built a border fort called Fort King George three kilometers east of Darien , but it had to be abandoned in 1727. In 1736 there was a renewed attempt at settlement by Scottish settlers under the leadership of James Oglethorpe . Today's Darien emerged from the settlement, making it the second oldest city in Georgia after Savannah .

Before the expansion of the railways, Darien was the Union's second cotton port.

At the end of the 19th century, Darien was described as a quiet place with 1543 inhabitants in 1880 and was the residence of a German consul .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1975 population at that time was distributed among 798 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.47 people per household. There are a total of 1090 households.

63.9% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.10 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 31.3% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 32.2% of all households.

27.2% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 23.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 46.1% of the population were male and 53.9% were female.

52.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 44.2% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 0.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 1.9% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 32,949 USD , while 31.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

The Fort King George , the Vernon Square-Columbus Square Historic District and the West Darien Historic District are in the National Register of Historic Places listed.

Darien is crossed by US Highway 17 and Georgia State Route 99 . The nearest airport is Savannah Airport (around 90 km north).
