Stiller Tod is a German television film by Peter Fratzscher from 2003. It is the fourth film in the ZDF crime film series Das Duo .

action

The seven-year-old Caroline Götz is found dead in a neighboring town of Lübeck. The child was suffocated and the location is apparently not the crime scene. The commissioners Marion Ahrens and Lizzy Krüger investigate and immediately come into conflict with the reporting media.

Caroline's mother is a single parent and often left her child alone because she had to go to work. Therefore, the girl was often left to herself and had her own key, which, however, was no longer found on the victim. The investigators are hoping for clues from the neighbor girl Melanie Marks, who lives here with her grandmother. The thirteen-year-old is deaf, but has taken care of Caroline more often and could have last seen her. But the girl is ignorant. Commissioner Krüger finds a "good connection" to the child and notices how lonely Melanie actually is. Her handicap has made her a loner because she doesn't feel that she belongs anywhere. In addition, she suffers from being abandoned by her mother and only being seen as a "burden" for her grandmother.

The research into violence against children in the past leads Ahrens and Krüger to the convicted Peter Steffens, who works as a caretaker in the local school and was seen with Caroline on the day of the crime. His alibi is vague and so his car is being investigated. Caroline's hair clip is found, so that he comes under suspicion. After the press hears about it, a prejudice of the man cannot be stopped. However, Commissioner Krüger has doubts and sheds light on other aspects of the possible course of events. She is helped by a statement from Melanie, according to which she allegedly was with Steffens that afternoon. She likes the caretaker because he's like an outsider like her. However, when traces of blood are found in Steffen's scales and cotton fibers from Caroline's clothes, it is clear that the child died there. Steffens is arrested and interrogated. However, he still denies having harmed the girl. He would only have found Caroline dead and for fear that he would be held responsible for the death of the child, he had removed the body. After Melanie learns that Steffens has been arrested and is to be charged, she makes a surprise confession.

Melanie Marks had argued with Caroline and after pushing her, the child fell unhappy. Because Caroline was bleeding, Melanie had taken a rag and then pressed it over her mouth to keep her quiet. In retrospect, she can no longer explain why she did that.

As part of the investigation, Ahrens confesses to her colleague that she herself had a daughter who had to die at the age of two because she was run over by a drunk. Therefore, the case is particularly close to her.

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv said: “The plot of the fourth case of the 'duo' may not sound particularly original. 'Silent Death' draws its charm from the commitment of the two inspectors to the handicapped witness. The stereotype remains the 'togetherness' of the two main characters, "" who also in 'Silent Death' persist in the usual, almost hostile relationship. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave it a medium rating (thumbs to the side) and found: “A provincial thriller without stink and flaws”.
