action

The pensioner Rudolf Berg is found dead in Lübeck's theater figure museum. Berg, who was a hobby puppeteer during his lifetime, regularly did minor repairs on the figures here. The rescue workers called initially assume a heart attack, but discover a puncture in the heart area, so that the police are called and the detective chief inspectors Marion Ahrens and Clara Hertz begin to investigate. Eight-year-old Jan, who was staying with the pensioner, had seen a man with a syringe, but his description of the possible perpetrator is not very helpful except for the striking fact that he pulled a leg after him.

Shortly thereafter, Hertz had to take care of another case, because there was an attempt to murder the advertising agency boss Monika Fallersleben, who described the perpetrator in terms of the limp in a similar way to the boy. Another connection between the two cases is an inheritance, which is about 800,000 euros and for which both Berg and Fallersleben were identified as beneficiaries. Further heirs are Silvia Wittenbach and Berg's nephew Stefan Kunze. Just as Ahrens and Hertz want to visit Silvia Wittenbach, they too are murdered. A farmer observed how a car tried to force the young woman's car off the road and only through his intervention could the murder be prevented. However, he can only describe the driver of the car as "kind of weird". The suspicion falls on Stefan Kunze, who is heavily in debt and prone to violence. However, the tire profile of his car does not match the prints that were saved at the scene of the accident. The right car can be found in a car rental company, but since the customer identified himself with a stolen identity card, there is still no concrete reference to the perpetrator. Only a fingerprint in the car leads to Helmut Blanke. He is a heir seeker and was tasked with finding the heirs. If successful, he will receive up to a third of the estate. When the inspectors want to question him, he is found dead in his hotel room. The investigators are now targeting a foundation that would get the inheritance if there were no heirs. This foundation is under the direction of the notary who administers the old lady's will. However, it seems unlikely that she would have hired a heir seeker if she had wanted the money for her foundation. Then it would have been enough to wait until the deadlines had passed.

After one-way syringes were found at Blanke and the exact drug that Rudolf Berg was given, Ahrens and Hertz are certain that he is the murderer they are looking for. It remains to be seen whether he acted on his own authority or was commissioned. The verification of his phone calls brings the only clue that Silvia Wittenbach is connected. Earth particles also lead to the family farm. Clara Hertz wants to interview her husband, Julius Wittenbach, there. He immediately feels convicted and threatens the inspector with a rifle. He admits to having been in contact with Blanke. The latter approached him with the request to pay him an additional fee for each failed heir if he would ensure that only one inheritance remained. In making this proposal, he assumed that Blanke would only name one heir as identified. He had neither wanted nor even remotely suspected that he would kill anyone. When Blanke then also carried out an attack on his wife, he wanted to confront him, whereby the situation escalated so that he killed Blanke. He didn't want any of that. Hertz looks at the man how desperate he is about the whole thing and can end the situation bloodlessly with the help of her colleague Marion Ahrens.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said about this episode: “'Dying instead of inheriting' is a fluently narrated, freshly staged and cleverly conceived utility crime story from Lübeck that integrates the regional ambience with the fish factory and (agricultural) landscape well as well as the smells of the Brings region closer to the viewer. And 'The Duo' is in a particularly good mood. So it means: take part in the puzzle, go on the wrong track without regret and not come to the whole thing with too much logic. "

Kino.de found Tilmann P. Gangloff : “A good old brain teaser thriller, without any message and only with the aim of delivering ninety minutes of exciting entertainment.” “The […] calmly staged film draws its charm from the various references that you can happily collect, because every now and then someone corresponds to the perpetrator profile. "
