The Diary of Anne Frank (original title The Diary of Anne Frank ) is a British drama film directed by Gareth Davies from 1987.

The film tells the story from Anne Frank's diary , in which the 14-year-old Jewess Anne Frank , played by Katharine Schlesinger , describes how she and her family and friends hid from the Nazis in a rear building in Amsterdam . Two years later - the Allies have already landed in Normandy - the hiding place is discovered and the people in hiding and some of their helpers are arrested.

action

Otto Frank, a Jewish spice dealer, moved from Frankfurt to Amsterdam with his wife Edith and daughters Margot and Anne. The seizure of power of Hitler in Germany prompted the family to take this step. When the situation in Holland worsened dramatically in 1940 after the country was occupied by the Germans, Otto Frank saw the only way out for himself and his family to go into hiding. In addition, his daughter Margot received an appeal from the SS for a labor camp . From July 6, 1942, the family used their office building at 263 Prinsengracht as a hiding place, as such buildings are less searched than residential buildings. A sparse accommodation is being prepared in the attic, hidden behind an entrance that is covered by a bookshelf. Hermann and Auguste Van Daan and their son Peter also find shelter there. The dentist Albert Dussel joins them later. Otto Frank's former employees support the people in hiding as best they can.

Anne Frank entrusts her most secret thoughts and feelings to her diary, which her parents gave her on her 13th birthday, and documents the two years in hiding, which are more than difficult. Since the employees are in the office building during the day, the hidden families must remain completely quiet and must not make any noise. Only after work is done downstairs can things get a little more communicative upstairs . Anne Frank, a lively girl who liked to be active and to be outdoors, suffers particularly from being violently isolated from the outside world. Anne watched the change of seasons longingly through a skylight window. Her diary, which she baptized “Kitty”, becomes a substitute friend for her and her closest confidante. “Kitty” also reports on her first shy love for Peter Van Daan. Anne's confidante is primarily her father. Contact with the outside world is maintained through the former employees of Otto Frank Miep and Elly as well as a radio with BBC reception.

Shortly before the hiding place was discovered on August 4, 1944 by the denunciation of a police officer who was investigating a break-in, she wrote: "The network is tightening more and more around us." The Gestapo arrests the Franks, the Van Daans and Albert Dussel and some of their helpers.

In the credits, the further fate of the evacuated people is reported by briefly freezing the picture of each individual person and adding a stamp that outlines the relevant information.

What happened next: The real Anne Frank was deported to the Westerbork transit camp with her family, the van Pels', Pfeffer, Kleiman and Kugler . From there they were deported to Auschwitz . Anne's mother Edith died of grief and exhaustion in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in January 1945 . Your father was set free. Margot and Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945 . Hermann van Pels was sent to the gas chamber in the Auschwitz main camp in October 1944; his wife Auguste died in April 1945 while being transported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp . Fritz Pfeffer died in December 1944 in Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg an der Ruhr . Kleiman and Kugler survived.

production

Production notes, filming

The material filmed by the BBC extended over four parts of 30 minutes each. It was later made into a single film, which was then released on DVD.

The few outdoor shots that are supposed to depict Amsterdam were shot in the Welsh Back district of Bristol .

template

The template for the script, Anne's diary, from which the film is recited more than once, was implemented according to the entries, with a few exceptions, so that all the main actors, with the exception of the Frank family, are addressed using the synonyms Anne invented . Mr Van Pels, for example, becomes Mr Van Daan and the dentist Fritz Pfeffer becomes Albert Dussel.

It is fictional that one of the policemen portrayed in the film has betrayed people hiding in the Secret Annex. Who is really to blame for the fact that the eight people were still targeted by the Gestapo has not yet been finally clarified.

synchronization

The dubbing file shows 13 speaking roles for the film, supplemented by two names from the speaker file.

publication

The film premiered in the United Kingdom on January 4, 1987, in Belgium on May 4, 1987 and in Japan on August 15, 1987. It was also released in Hungary and Venezuela and in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The film was released by Studio Hamburg Enterprises (Al! VE) on April 26, 2013 as number 80 as part of the "Big Stories" series.

reception

criticism

On the media services page , it is stated that “the laconic style of the diary notes” experiences “an objective, almost brittle film dramatization”. The performance of the actors was praised with “convincing”, “the seriousness of the staging” invites “to examine the authentic original, which is one of the most moving documents from this time”.

In the FWU supplements it says: “What distinguishes the film, besides its excellent actors and the factual narrative style, is its high degree of authenticity. Pictures, locations and furnishings are chosen and staged with great care and attention to detail. ”The film tends to convey what is happening from the“ perspective ”of Anne Frank, who was 13 when she moved in and then 15 years old.
