action
Part 1
Thomas Dorn and his team of investigators are on the trail of a serial killer who is angry in Vienna. He is feared because of his brutal methods of killing. Dorn, who often moved on the verge of legality with his investigative methods, deals more and more with the case and gets into a psychological crisis.
Monica Faber, who carries out the case analysis, suspects ritual murder, while colleague Peters thinks of ritual murder in an Islamist milieu. The Turkish-born police officer Fatih, however, has a different opinion, although he is barely making any progress with his investigation. In addition, the head of the team, Renz, wants a quick clarification before he retires. The investigation seems successful when the police lock up the alleged perpetrator. However, this must be released, because at that time another murder according to the same pattern is happening.
Dorn continues to chase his murderer, but the facts that lead to the solution are becoming more and more blurred. In addition, Dorn has no more time for his family in addition to the investigation, which is growing more and more apart. The relationship with his 16-year-old son, who lives with his mother and stepfather after the parents' divorce, suffers in particular. Over time, Dorn loses control of himself and only Monica Faber and Renz are at his side, as his family is now more and more involved in the case. At the end of the first part, Dorn's son also becomes a victim of the serial killer, whereupon Dorn finds out that the ritual murders all relate to the Ten Commandments .
Part 2
The second part of the film begins with the funeral of Dorn's son. After the ceremony, Dorn drives to his ex-wife, who asks him to find and kill the murderer of his and her son. He drives to Mr. Eck, the owner of the comic shop where Oliver worked. This makes himself suspicious. But Dorn suspects that Sacrifice is the culprit. He visits him at a concert where he works as a DJ. The situation escalates, but at this moment Dorn's colleagues arrive. Thomas and Monica drive to Thomas' apartment, where he reveals his past to her. As they get closer and closer, Peters becomes more and more entangled in this case. He, who has a love affair with Monica, is married and violates the commandment You shall not commit adultery . When Monica tries to visit him after he tells her that he is leaving his wife, she finds him dead.
Meanwhile, Dorn finds out that there is a connection between the murders and his own family. His further research leads him to an old boarding school where a priest taught a group of ten men. Your identification mark is a cross with a circle - Dorn's father wore one, as did Eck. The 10 made different careers, assisted each other, but Dorn's father made a career as a commissioner, but this was not possible without the help of the others. He betrayed the priest when he became more and more fanatical. He and Renz, who also belonged to the covenant, handed the priest over to the Vatican. The priest was banished to a Romanian monastery, which later burned down. He was thought to be dead, but the priest secretly returned to Vienna.
Dorn finds the alleged grave of the priest and recognizes on a picture that it is a well-known comic artist who appeared briefly in the first part of the film when he promised to read the manuscript of Dorn's son. Dorn is now looking for him, but the former community is now also after him to kill him and cover up all connections. There is a showdown in the empty boarding school building - the priest kills Renz there and tries to force Dorn to kill him. Dorn refuses and the priest commits suicide.
useful information
As is so often the case in thrillers that take place in Austria, the term “ Kommissar ” is used as an official title for the persons involved, although this official title does not exist in the Austrian police . This is probably done with a view to better "compatibility" with the German television audience.
production
The film was shot from June to August 2007 in Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Croatia and was produced by Lisa Film . The original title for the film was " Umbra Mortis ".
