biography

Ryding lives in Bretherton , Lancashire. He competed in his first ski races on artificial slopes at the age of eight and did his first races on snow at the age of 12. In April 2002 he took part in FIS races for the first time . In 2006 he became British Junior Champion in Slalom and Giant Slalom and was accepted into the British Ski Team. Ryding won his first FIS races in April 2007 and has competed in the European Cup since December of the same year . He was able to score for the first time in the European Cup in November 2008 with places 19 and 18 in the indoor slaloms in Amnéville and Landgraaf .

In 2008 and 2009 Ryding was British Slalom Champion. In February 2009 he took part in the World Championships in Val-d'Isère , where he was 41st in the giant slalom, but did not finish in the slalom. On December 21, 2009, Ryding started in the Alta Badia slalom for the first time in the World Cup , but fell out in the first run, just like his second start in the Zagreb slalom on January 6, 2010. In February 2010 he took part in the Vancouver Winter Olympics as one of four British ski racers . He was the best in his country in slalom with 27th place and came 47th in giant slalom. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished 39th in giant slalom, while not finishing in slalom. At the end of the 2011 season he became British champion in slalom for the third time and in giant slalom for the first time.

In December 2011, Ryding achieved his first top 10 finishes in the European Cup when he finished ninth in the City Event in St. Vigil and seventh in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio . In the 2011/2012 season he also took part in World Cup races again, but did not get into the second round of any of his four slalom starts. He first achieved this at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , when he won his first World Cup points on November 11, 2012 with place 26 in the Levi slalom. Five weeks later he achieved his first podium in the European Cup with third place in the City Event of St. Vigil. With three more podium finishes, he won the slalom classification of the European Cup. On December 22, 2014, he achieved his best World Cup placement to date with 16th place in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom.

In the 2015/16 season , Ryding was able to further increase his performance, finishing 12th in the Val-d'Isère slalom was the highlight of the season. The following season, 2016/17 , he placed in the top 10 for the first time when he finished 6th in the first slalom of the World Cup in Levi . He was able to surpass this result on January 22, 2017 with second place on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel . This is the first podium for a Brit since Konrad Bartelski took second place in the Val Gardena downhill on December 13, 1981. In the slalom at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , he was in the promising fourth place after the first run, but then fell back to 11th place.

On January 22, 2022, Ryding won the Kitzbühel slalom. Ryding's first victory in a World Cup race is also the first World Cup victory by a British athlete since the inception of the Alpine Ski World Cup.
