David Hall (artist)

David Hall (* 1937 in Leicester ; † October 2014 in Kent ) was a British sculptor, installation and video artist .

Career

David Hall was born in Leicester in 1937 and grew up in the Humberstone neighborhood. He studied architecture, art and design at Leicester College of Art and sculpture at the Royal College of Art .

Hall published video reviews in the bimonthly art magazine Studio International . Through his publications, he introduced the term “time-based media”, which is now widely used . In 1971 Scottish television broadcast "TV interruptions" during the Edinburgh Festival . The series consists of 7 short films. One of them is “Tap piece”, in which a tap is shown on the screen through which it is filled with water as if it were an aquarium. Then the line is shown, which is created by the tipping out of the water and which shows a constantly decreasing diagonal on the screen until it disappears completely. David Hall's films are broadcast on BBC TV, Channel 4 TV, Scottish TV, Canal + TV and MTV.

Hall was director of film, video, and sound at the Kent Institute of Art & Design and has taught at the Royal College of Art, St Martin's School of Art , Chelsea College of Art and Design , San Francisco Art Institute , NSCAD University and others Universities. Hall was made an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee in 2003 .

In a review of the exhibition “1001 TV Sets (End Piece)”, which took place in 2012, David Hall was dubbed “the godfather of British video art” in the newspaper The Independent , probably as a reference to Nam June Paik , who was repeatedly referred to as “ Father of Video Art ”.

David Hall has been a successful sculptor since the 1960s. In 1965 he was awarded the 1st prize for sculpture at the Paris Biennale . In 1966 David Hall showed works at the Primary Structures exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York City , which heralded the dawn of minimalism .

Video installations

David Hall's first video installation was shown in London in 1972. Further video works were shown at internationally known exhibition locations. These include documenta 6 in Kassel, the Tate Gallery in London, Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna in Vienna.

Memberships

In 1966 David Hall, along with John Latham , Barry Flanagan , Jeffrey Shaw , Anna Ridley, Hugh Davies , David Toop , Stuart Brisley and Ian Breakwell , was a member of the Artist Placement Group (APG) founded in London in 1965 by Barbara Steveni plays a significant role in British conceptual art .

In 1976 David Hall founded London Video Arts in collaboration with Stuart Marshall , Stephen Partridge , Tamara Krikorian , Roger Barnard, David Critchley and others, which helps artists with video production, sales, advertising and exhibitions. In 1999, London Video Arts and London Film-Makers' Co-op merged to form LUX Artists Moving Image .
